A General Manager (GM) at a furnace steel plant in Urla is responsible for leading the overall plant operations, achieving production targets, managing teams, and ensuring operational excellence across departments. This includes oversight of production, maintenance, quality control, safety, budget management, and effective use of all plant resources.​

Core Job Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and oversee overall plant operations, meeting production targets for furnaces and steelmaking units.​
• Supervise all key departments: production, maintenance, quality assurance, and logistics.​
• Monitor raw material utilization, control production costs, and optimize plant efficiency while ensuring product quality.​
• Ensure smooth functioning and coordination of key units like rolling mills, induction or arc furnaces, and material handling systems.​
• Implement and review production plans with management, ensuring alignment with company objectives.​
• Lead, motivate, and develop teams to drive performance and maintain discipline.​
• Oversee compliance with safety, health, environmental, and quality standards.​
• Optimize fuel and power consumption for furnaces and other high-energy equipment.​

Specific Technical and Managerial Duties

• Develop and implement strategies for process optimization, new technologies adoption, and continual improvement.​
• Ensure preventive and predictive maintenance schedules are executed to reduce downtime and maximize uptime.​
• Prepare, manage, and control operational budgets, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.​
• Lead quality control activities to maintain certification standards (e.g., ISO), and conduct regular audits.​
• Coordinate with vendors to ensure timely procurement and supply of raw materials and spare parts.​
• Analyze production data and process parameters to identify and troubleshoot issues and implement corrective actions.​
• Manage customer relationships and represent the company during audits, technical discussions, and client meetings.​
• Develop and implement systems, procedures, and manuals for furnace operations, modifying schedules for various grades as needed.​

Skills and Qualifications

• Proven leadership and decision-making abilities with deep knowledge of steel plant/furnace operations.​
• Experience in production planning, process optimization, team management, and cost control.​
• Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills to handle large teams and manage cross-functional issues.​
• Engineering degree (Mechanical/Metallurgy/Electrical) with extensive experience in steel plant management is usually required.​
