Commissioning Editor

JOB BRIEF   Commissioning Editor acquires and develops STM science books, manages author relationships, evaluates proposals, oversees projects, and ensures timely delivery aligned with publishing goals and market trends.   PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY   1.   Identify and commission new book projects in relevant STM subject areas. 2.   Build and manage relationships with authors, editors, and academic institutions. 3.   Evaluate proposals for scientific quality, market need, and commercial potential. 4.   Oversee editorial process, including peer review, manuscript delivery, and production handover. 5.   Monitor market trends to inform publishing strategy and maintain a competitive portfolio.   EDUCATION   a.   Minimum Education :- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant Scientific, Technical, or Medical (STM) field (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Medicine, etc). b.   Technical Education :- Master’s or PhD preferred   EXPERIENCE   a.   Minimum Experience  :-        5 years b.   Minimum Experience :-        2 Years in academic, professional, or STM publishing   BEHAVIOURAL SKILLS: Strong communication skills – able to engage effectively with authors, editors, and internal teams.   Relationship-building – fosters trust with academic stakeholders and contributors. Attention to detail – ensures accuracy and quality in editorial work and contracts. Time management – handles multiple projects and deadlines efficiently. Initiative and proactiveness – identifies new opportunities and drives projects independently.   TECHNICAL SKILLS: Subject matter understanding – good grasp of STM topics and terminology. Editorial skills – experience reviewing proposals, manuscripts, and managing peer review. Project management – familiarity with editorial timelines and production workflows. Market research – ability to assess trends and competitor offerings. Publishing tools proficiency – knowledge of manuscript submission systems, databases (e.g., ScholarOne, Editorial Manager), and MS Office.
