Role of Quality Control in EPC

In EPC projects—such as power plants, oil & gas, infrastructure, and industrial facilities—Quality Control ensures that engineering, materials, and construction meet required standards, codes, and client specifications. QC is a critical part of the wider Quality Management System (QMS) and directly impacts safety, reliability, and cost efficiency.

Key Objectives of QC in EPC

Compliance – Ensure all work complies with codes, standards (ASME, ASTM, ISO, API, IEC, etc.), and client specifications.

Defect Prevention – Detect and correct issues at the earliest stage (design, procurement, fabrication, or construction).

Risk Mitigation – Reduce failures, accidents, and rework during operations.

Documentation & Traceability – Maintain proper inspection reports, test certificates, and quality records.

Client Satisfaction – Deliver projects with zero defects and within timelines.

QC Activities Across EPC Phases

1. Engineering Phase

Design document reviews (drawings, datasheets, specifications).
Verification of engineering calculations.
Independent design checks and approvals.

2. Procurement Phase

Vendor evaluation and approval.
Material test certificate (MTC) review.
Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT).
Inspection at vendor works.

3. Construction / Execution Phase

Incoming material inspection.
Welding inspection (WPS, PQR, welder qualification, NDT).
Dimensional checks, alignment, tolerances.
Electrical and instrumentation testing.
Civil works quality checks (concrete strength, soil compaction, etc.).
Hydrostatic, pneumatic, leak, and functional testing.

4. Commissioning & Handover Phase

Pre-commissioning checks.
System turnover packages with inspection reports.
Punch list clearance.
Final acceptance tests with client.

KPIs for QC in EPC

% of inspections passed at first attempt.
Number of NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports) raised and closed.
