Role Summary

The Transplant Nephrologist will be responsible for providing comprehensive kidney transplant care, including pre-transplant evaluation, post-transplant management, and long-term follow-up of renal transplant patients. The role involves close coordination with transplant surgeons, intensivists, dialysis teams, and multidisciplinary staff to ensure optimal outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Care

  • Conduct detailed evaluations of transplant candidates and donors.
  • Manage pre-transplant workups, medical optimization, and counselling.
  • Provide inpatient and outpatient care for post-transplant patients.
  • Monitor immunosuppressive therapy and manage complications like rejection, infections, and metabolic issues.
  • Oversee chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patient management when needed.
  • Participate in dialysis rounds (HD, PD) related to transplant patients.

2. Transplant Program Support

  • Work closely with transplant surgeons and the transplant coordination team.
  • Participate in transplant committee meetings and case selections.
  • Ensure adherence to medical, legal, and ethical protocols of organ transplantation.
  • Assist in developing and improving protocols, SOPs, and clinical pathways.

3. Emergency & Critical Care Support

  • Manage acute transplant emergencies, graft dysfunction, complications, and ICU care.
  • Provide on-call support for transplant patients.

4. Patient Education & Counselling

  • Educate patients and family members regarding transplant process, medication adherence, lifestyle, and follow-up care.
  • Engage in community awareness programs if required.

5. Academic & Research Contribution

  • Participate in departmental teaching for residents, fellows, and nursing staff.
  • Engage in clinical research, audits, and publish case studies when possible.

6. Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of medical records.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, quality standards, and transplant regulatory guidelines.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives and accreditation processes.

Qualifications & Experience

  • MD/DNB in General Medicine or Pediatrics (as applicable).
  • DM/DNB in Nephrology from a recognized institution.
  • Additional fellowship/training in Kidney Transplantation preferred.
  • Valid medical registration.
  • 0–10+ years of experience in renal transplant care (depending on level of hiring).
