The L3 Systems Engineer role is more engineering-focused than traditional system admin roles. It blends AWS design, implementation, SaaS administration, on-prem oversight, and technical leadership. This role also acts as escalation for L2s and is expected to mentor junior engineers.
- Design, deploy, and manage AWS cloud infrastructure (EC2, S3, RDS, IAM, Lambda, CloudFormation).
- Implement and maintain disaster recovery solutions (Veeam, Commvault, AWS Snapshots).
- Administer SaaS (Okta, AWS Workspaces, Slack, Google Workspace, Zoom).
- Monitor observability tools (Datadog, Orion, Nagios, WhatsUp Gold).
- Support Active Directory, hardware lifecycle, Windows/Mac OS.
- Collaborate with DevOps for CI/CD pipelines.
- Provide escalation support, mentor L2 engineers.
- Support in security incident responses (“all hands on deck”).
- Balance hands-on work with governance and compliance awareness.
- 5+ years AWS engineering/administration.
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional preferred/expected.
- Proven Okta administration expertise.
- Infrastructure automation (Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation).
- Familiarity with containers (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS/EKS).
- Strong networking background (TCP/IP, DNS, VPN).
- Excellent troubleshooting/documentation skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in CS/IT.
L3 expected to have certifications.
