Purpose of the Role
To direct and supervise SD policies, initiatives, and adherence throughout the
company. In accordance with business goals and global best practices, this position
supports to maintain the highest standards of sustainable development in company.
Key roles and responsibilities
Sustainability strategy
To create and communicate a clear and coherent sustainability strategy for the
company. This involves conducting a sustainability assessment, identifying material
issues, setting goals and targets, and developing action plans and indicators. A
sustainability manager also needs to ensure that the strategy is aligned with the
overall business objectives, as well as with relevant standards, frameworks and
regulations, such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the United Nations
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or the Task Force on Climate-related
Financial Disclosures (TCFD).
Stakeholder engagement
To engage with various internal and external stakeholders, such as employees,
customers, suppliers, investors, regulators, NGOs and communities. Needs to
understand the expectations and concerns of these stakeholders, and to
communicate the companys sustainability performance, achievements and
challenges. Also needs to foster collaboration and dialogue among these
stakeholders, and to solicit feedback and input for continuous improvement. To
represent the corporation in relevant networks, forums and events related to
sustainability.
Sustainability reporting
To prepare & publish a regular and transparent sustainability reports that disclose the
companys sustainability impacts, risks and opportunities. Needs to collect, analyse
and verify data and information from various sources, and to present them in a clear,
concise and consistent manner. Also needs to follow the best practices and
guidelines for sustainability reporting, such as the GRI Standards, the Integrated
Reporting Framework or the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB).
May also respond to external requests and surveys from rating agencies, media or
other stakeholders.
Sustainability innovation
Plays a key role in driving sustainability innovation within the company. This means
identifying and exploring new ways of creating value for the business and the society
by reducing environmental footprints, enhancing social impacts and increasing
economic benefits. Needs to support and encourage innovation across the
organization, by fostering a culture of creativity, learning and experimentation. Needs
to monitor and evaluate the outcomes and impacts of sustainability innovation
projects, and to share best practices and lessons learned.
Sustainability education
To educate and empower the corporation's employees and leaders on sustainability
issues, trends and opportunities. Needs to design and deliver training programs,
workshops and events that raise awareness, build knowledge and develop skills on
sustainability topics. Needs to create and disseminate internal communication
materials, such as newsletters, intranet posts or podcasts, that showcase the
corporation's sustainability stories, achievements and challenges. Also mentor and
coach other employees who are interested or involved in sustainability initiatives.
Sustainability leadership
Acts as a sustainability leader within and outside the company, who inspires,
influences and mobilizes others to take action for sustainability. To demonstrate a
strong commitment, passion and vision for sustainability, and to role model the
values and behaviours that support it. Needs to build and leverage relationships,
networks and partnerships that advance the corporation's sustainability agenda. Also
to advocate and lobby for sustainability policies, regulations and standards that
create a level playing field and a conducive environment for sustainability.
