JD : Rancher Platform Engineer

Summary

The Rancher Platform Engineer is responsible for the design, deployment, maintenance, and operation of a robust and scalable Kubernetes platform using Rancher. This role focuses on enabling development teams to rapidly deploy and manage containerized applications while ensuring high availability, security, and performance of the underlying platform infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

* Platform Management: Design, deploy, configure, and maintain Kubernetes clusters (e.g., RKE, K3s, EKS, AKS, GKE) using Rancher Manager in multi-cloud, hybrid, or on-premises environments.

* Automation (IaC): Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools like Terraform or Ansible to automate the provisioning and lifecycle management of the Rancher infrastructure and clusters.

* CI/CD Integration: Integrate the Rancher platform with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, ArgoCD, Flux) to ensure seamless and automated application deployment and updates.

* Security & RBAC: Implement and enforce security best practices, including Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), network policies, secrets management (e.g., HashiCorp Vault), and vulnerability scanning within Rancher and the managed Kubernetes clusters.

* Observability: Configure and manage the platform's monitoring, logging, and alerting systems using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and centralized logging solutions (e.g., ELK/EFK stack).

* Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve complex issues related to the Kubernetes control plane, networking (CNI), storage (CSI), application deployment, and Rancher components.

* Application Catalog/Fleet Management: Manage the application catalog, including custom Helm charts and Rancher's fleet deployment capabilities, to standardize and simplify application deployments.

* Collaboration & Support: Provide technical guidance and support to development and operations teams on containerization, Kubernetes best practices, and effective utilization of the Rancher platform.

* Capacity Planning: Monitor platform capacity and performance, implementing optimizations for cost-efficiency, scalability, and resource utilization.

Required Technical Skills

* Experience: 3+ years of hands-on experience in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or Platform Engineering roles.

* Rancher: Deep knowledge and hands-on experience with Rancher for multi-cluster management, cluster provisioning, and security management.

* Kubernetes: Expert-level understanding of core Kubernetes concepts, architecture, and resource management (Pods, Deployments, Services, Ingress, Persistent Volumes, etc.).

* Linux & Networking: Strong background in Linux system administration, networking principles, and troubleshooting container networking issues.

* Cloud Experience: Experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS or GCP) and their managed Kubernetes services (EKS, AKS, GKE).

* IaC: Proficiency in Terraform or comparable IaC tools for infrastructure provisioning.

* Scripting: Strong scripting skills in Bash or Python.

* CI/CD: Experience with modern Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery tools.

* Version Control: Proficient with Git and GitOps methodologies.
