Position: Sr.Tooling Engineer / Asst. Manager (press tools,stamping)

Location: Dharwad

Department: Technical NPD

Reporting To: Technical Manager

Role Overview

The Tooling Design Engineer will be responsible for the complete design and development of tooling solutions, including 3D modeling, 2D drafting, assembly design, detailed drawings, and machine trials. The role demands strong expertise in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), latest CAD software (UG NX / Siemens NX, SolidWorks), and hands-on involvement in manufacturing and trial activities to ensure robust, production-ready tooling solutions.

Key Responsibilities

1.Tooling Design & Development

Design and develop tooling, fixtures, gauges, and related equipment.

Prepare 3D models, assemblies, and detailed 2D drawings using Unigraphics NX (Version 2306 or latest) and SolidWorks (2024 or latest).

Ensure designs meet functional, manufacturability, and quality requirements.

2.Drawing & Drafting

Apply GD&T for all component and assembly drawings.

Generate BOMs, dimensional reports, and detailed documentation.

3.Process Follow-up

Coordinate with internal teams and vendors for tooling manufacturing.

Conduct design reviews, feasibility checks, and ensure design-to-manufacture alignment.

Follow up with machine shops, vendors, and suppliers for timely completion.

4.Machine Trials & Validation

Participate in trial runs on machines to validate tooling performance.

Identify and resolve tooling issues during trial and production.

Implement design modifications and improvements as required.

5.Documentation & Compliance

Maintain design records, technical documentation, and revision control.

Adhere to APQP, PPAP, and IATF 16949 standards for tooling development.

Prepare DFMEA and other relevant documents for tooling projects.

6.Continuous Improvement

Explore new design methodologies, materials, and technologies to improve tooling life and performance.

Support cost reduction and productivity improvement initiatives.

7.Tool Material Selection & Application

Select appropriate tool steels and materials based on application, wear, and forming requirements.

Expertise in materials such as:

D2, P10, H13, Carbide, and other high-performance tool steels.

Materials for cold sheet metal forming, stamping, and progressive dies

Optimize tooling life, performance, and cost through proper material selection and heat treatment.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • CAD Software Expertise:

  • Unigraphics NX (Siemens NX 2306 / latest)

  • SolidWorks 2024 / latest

  • Strong knowledge of GD&T .

  • Experience in 3D modeling, assembly design, and 2D drafting.

  • Hands-on exposure to tooling trials, validation, and troubleshooting.

  • Good understanding of manufacturing processes (machining, heat treatment, etc.).

  • Knowledge of APQP, FMEA.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Qualification & Experience

  • Education: B.E. / B.Tech. in Mechanical / Production Engineering (or equivalent).

  • Experience: 37 years of relevant experience in tooling design. Aerospace would be an advantage.

  • Preferred Industry: Automotive, Bearing, Sheet Metal, Machining, or Precision Engineering.
