What you will do As a Senior Software Engineer at Karat, you'll build product features that directly improve how engineers are interviewed and how engineering organizations operate. You'll play a key technical leadership role in developing our flagship interviewing platform that transforms how companies evaluate technical talent, working hands-on to create and build complex products that serve engineers, candidates, and internal teams as we scale. As a vital member of our growing company, you'll collaborate closely with engineering leadership to execute on our vision of transforming technical talent assessment, taking ownership of complex projects that directly impact our mission to be the definitive measure of talent. This position will be required to work a schedule overlapping with U.S. counterparts. Develop sophisticated web applications and microservices using a variety of programming languages, testing and development tools, laying the foundation for Karat's new systems and helping drive our migration to microservices while revamping existing codebases. Write clean, scalable services, components, and APIs and the backend that our products depend on, making architectural decisions that ensure long-term maintainability and performance. Collaborate to further develop effective engineering processes with our cross-functional team of Analysts, Data Scientists, Designers, Product Managers, and Software Engineers to define features and build powerful, easy-to-use products and customer-facing workflow tools. Own and deliver complex projects from design to release that fall into your team's area on time and with high-quality code with minimal defects. Lead and mentor more junior engineers by drawing from your rich set of experiences and technical knowledge, helping to elevate the overall engineering capability of the team. Drive architecture discussions and technical decision-making, balancing cutting-edge approaches with proven, reliable technologies. Champion engineering best practices, including testing strategies, performance optimization, and technical debt management. The experience you will bring 7+ years of post-intern, professional experience developing and launching sophisticated web applications and distributed systems into production environments Deep expertise in modern programming languages (Ruby, Python, Java, TypeScript/JavaScript) with mastery of web frameworks and design patterns Strong experience with system architecture, microservices design, database optimization, and API development (REST and GraphQL) Proven experience with cloud infrastructure, DevOps practices, and scalable deployment technologies (AWS, GCP, or Azure) Demonstrated technical leadership experience, including mentoring team members and leading technical initiatives Advanced knowledge of software engineering best practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring, and performance optimization Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with experience making technical tradeoffs in complex systems Excellent communication and collaboration skills in the English language (verbal and written); proven ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders and translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences Track record of delivering high-quality software on schedule while maintaining technical excellence Experience with agile development methodologies and cross-functional team collaboration Interest in technical interviewing, talent assessment, or educational technology is highly valued Proficiency in leveraging AI tools to accelerate development workflows and productivity This position is only available to candidates residing in Bengaluru (formerly known as Bangalore). While our team operates 100% remotely , we are currently limiting hiring to this specific location. Applications from other cities in India will not be considered at this time.
