Senior Quality Manager - Rolling Mill & SMS

Role & responsibilities

To lead and oversee the quality management system for the Steel Melting Shop (SMS) and Rolling Mill, ensuring that billets, blooms, and finished rolled products consistently meet customer, BIS, and internal quality standards. Responsible for process control, product certification, and customer satisfaction through robust quality systems.

Key Responsibilities:

Quality Management (SMS & Rolling Mill)

* Ensure quality control of liquid steel, billets, blooms, and rolled products as per BIS/ISO standards.

* Develop and monitor process parameters in SMS (temperature, composition, inclusion control, casting quality).

* Oversee quality of rolling mill products (TMT bars, wire rods, structural steel, etc.) to ensure dimensional accuracy, mechanical properties, and surface finish.

* Approve test certificates (TCs) and ensure traceability of products.

* Implement corrective and preventive actions for process deviations and customer complaints.

Testing & Inspection

* Manage chemical, mechanical, and physical testing in laboratory and ensure calibration of equipment (UTM, spectrometer, hardness tester, etc.).

* Supervise NDT (Ultrasonic, MPI) for billets, blooms, and rolled products.

* Conduct stage-wise inspections during casting and rolling to minimize rejection/rework.

System & Compliance

* Maintain compliance with BIS, ISO, and customer specifications.

* Ensure readiness for customer audits, third-party inspections, and statutory certifications.

* Drive continual improvement initiatives in quality management systems.

Team Management

* Lead and guide a team of quality engineers, inspectors, and lab technicians.

* Conduct training sessions for operators and engineers on quality standards and defect prevention.

Coordination & Reporting

* Coordinate with SMS, RM, Dispatch, and Marketing teams for quality assurance.

* Analyze rejection trends, customer feedback, and prepare MIS reports for management.

* Participate in product development and trials for new grades/specifications.

**Skills & Competencies:**

* Strong knowledge of steelmaking processes, rolling technology, and metallurgical quality standards.

* Expertise in BIS/ISO specifications, process metallurgy, and testing standards.

* Leadership and decision-making ability.

* Root cause analysis & problem-solving skills.

* Good communication and customer handling skills.

Preferred candidate profile

Qualification & Experience:

* B.Tech / M.Tech in Metallurgy / Materials Science / Mechanical / Production Engineering.

* 1218 years of experience in Steel Plant Quality (SMS & Rolling Mill).

* Should have handled BIS certification, TMT rolling standards, and quality audits.
