Job Description

Position Title: Plant Operator – Water/Wastewater Treatment PlantDepartment: Operations  Position OverviewThe Water Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining all units of the water or wastewater treatment plant to ensure continuous, safe, and compliant operation. The role involves routine checks, equipment operation, process adjustments, laboratory testing, and maintaining accurate records of plant performance. 2. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Plant Operation & MonitoringStart, stop, and operate pumps, blowers, mixers, valves, dosing systems, and treatment units. Monitor process parameters such as pH, turbidity, TDS, DO, MLSS, chlorine, etc. Adjust chemical dosing based on jar test or process requirements. Record plant readings in logbook/SCADA system. B. Equipment MaintenancePerform routine maintenance like cleaning strainers, checking pump health, greasing, backwashing filters, etc. Assist maintenance team in troubleshooting mechanical/electrical issues. Report any abnormalities or breakdowns immediately. C. Laboratory & Quality ChecksCollect and test water samples (raw, treated, intermediate). Conduct basic tests: pH, TSS, COD/BOD sample collection, chlorine residual, etc. Ensure treated water meets regulatory and client standards. D. Safety & ComplianceFollow all safety protocols related to chemical handling, confined space, PPE usage, etc. Maintain good housekeeping across the plant. Ensure adherence to pollution control board norms and plant SOPs. E. DocumentationMaintain daily operation logs, chemical consumption reports, downtime records. Update shift handover reports and support ISO/EMS documentation. Assist in audit preparation and compliance reporting. 3. Skills & CompetenciesGood understanding of WTP/ETP/STP processes (RO, UF, MBBR, MBR, softener, DM plant, etc.). Ability to interpret SCADA trends and operational parameters. Basic mechanical/electrical troubleshooting skills. Strong problem-solving ability and attention to detail. Knowledge of safety protocols for water treatment chemicals. 4. Educational QualificationITI / Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or relevant trade. B.Sc (Chemistry/Environmental) preferred. Certification in water treatment operations is an added advantage. 5. Experience Requirement1–5 years in operating WTP/ETP/STP/RO plants (depending on level). Freshers with technical training may also be considered for junior roles. 6. Physical & Work Environment RequirementsAbility to work in rotational shifts, including nights. Ability to lift moderate weight for routine tasks. Comfortable working around chemicals, wet/slippery surfaces, reactors, clarifiers, etc. 7. Additional Responsibilities (Optional Based on Company)Support emergency repairs and breakdown calls. Manage chemical stock and reorder levels. Coordinate with lab, maintenance, and utility teams.
