Job Title: Mechanical Static Engineer – Process Equipment (Thermal Systems, Heavy Fabrication)

Location: Tambaram, Chennai

Department: Engineering & Design

Reports to: Engineering Manager / Technical Director

Job Purpose

To design, calculate, and develop static process equipment such as evaporators, dryers, crystallizers, heat exchangers, condensers, pressure vessels, and associated piping systems. Responsible for mechanical, thermal, process, and piping design from concept to fabrication, ensuring compliance with codes, safety, and performance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

1. Mechanical Design

• Design static process equipment: shell & tube heat exchangers, evaporators, dryers, crystallizers, condensers, and storage/pressure vessels.
• Perform mechanical calculations: pressure vessel thickness, nozzle loads, flange ratings, wind/seismic loads.
• Prepare GA drawings, fabrication drawings, and bill of materials.
• Select materials for corrosive and high-temperature applications.
• Ensure compliance with ASME, TEMA, API, IS codes.

2. Thermal & Process Design

• Conduct thermal design for evaporators, heat exchangers, and condensers (heat load, LMTD, heat transfer coefficients).
• Perform energy & mass balance for thermal and drying systems.
• Optimize designs for energy efficiency and low OPEX.
• Define process parameters (flow, pressure, temperature) for each stage.
• Evaluate waste heat recovery opportunities.

3. Piping & Layout

• Develop piping PFDs, P&IDs for equipment and utility lines.
• Size pipes, select fittings, valves, gaskets, and supports.
• Ensure ergonomic plant layout and ease of maintenance.
• Work with structural team for equipment foundations and supports.

4. Project Coordination

• Interface with procurement for vendor specifications and quotations.
• Support shop floor with fabrication queries.
• Coordinate with automation team for integration of instruments and controls.

5. Standards & Compliance

• Familiar with ASME Sec VIII, TEMA, IS 2825, API 660, IS codes.
• Ensure all designs meet statutory and customer requirements.
• Prepare design dossiers with all calculations and certifications.

Skills & Qualifications

Education:

• B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering (M.Tech preferred but not mandatory).

Experience:

• 3–10 years in process equipment design & fabrication.
• Experience in evaporators, dryers, crystallizers, or other static equipment preferred.

Technical Skills:

• PV Elite / COMPRESS (pressure vessel design)
• HTRI / Aspen EDR (thermal design)
• AutoCAD / SolidWorks / Inventor (drafting & 3D)
• MS Excel for engineering calculations
• Knowledge of CFD & FEA is an added advantage.
