Job Purpose

To manage and optimize the lapping process in the production line, ensuring surface finish, flatness, and dimensional accuracy of precision components while maintaining productivity and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, monitor, and execute lapping operations based on production schedules.
• Set up and operate lapping machines (manual, semi-automatic, and fully automatic).
• Ensure proper selection and usage of lapping consumables such as abrasives, slurry, and conditioning rings.
• Establish and maintain process parameters to achieve desired Ra (surface finish), flatness, and parallelism.
• Troubleshoot lapping-related issues, including surface finish variations, loading patterns, and material wear.
• Coordinate with quality and R&D departments for process improvements and validation trials.
• Maintain machine health through routine checks, preventive maintenance, and service coordination.
• Train and guide lapping machine operators and shop floor technicians.
• Ensure adherence to safety standards and 5S practices.
• Prepare and maintain daily production, downtime, and quality reports.
• Work closely with tool room and fixture development teams to ensure fixturing adequacy.

Key Skills & Competencies

• Strong understanding of lapping processes, surface metrology, and material removal mechanisms
• Knowledge of lapping materials: diamond slurry, alumina, silicon carbide, etc.
• Familiar with surface measurement equipment (profilometers, optical flat, interferometers, etc.)
• Ability to analyze data for continuous improvement (SPC, root cause analysis, etc.)
• Hands-on with precision parts, especially in automotive, aerospace, semiconductor, or medical industries
• Basic knowledge of ISO 9001 / IATF 16949 quality systems

Qualification & Experience

• Diploma / BE / B.Tech in Mechanical, Production, or Manufacturing Engineering
• 2–6 years of experience in lapping or fine finishing operations
• Experience with double-sided or single-sided lapping machines (eg. Lapmaster, Speedfam, Hyder) is preferred

Preferred Add-ons

• Exposure to flatness and mirror-finish requirements
• Knowledge in lapping automation or integration with upstream/downstream processes
• Familiarity with lean manufacturing and OEE tracking
