InDesign Template Developer

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled InDesign Typesetting Template Creator to design and develop structured, build, and manage professional-grade Adobe InDesign templates that streamline our layout and publishing workflows and reusable templates in Adobe InDesign for efficient production of print and digital publications. This role requires deep knowledge of typesetting principles, layout design, paragraph and character styles, and efficient template structuring for consistency and scalability across print and/or digital projects and automation capabilities, and can create clean, scalable templates that meet professional publishing standards.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and develop reusable, well-organized InDesign templates for various document types (books, reports, manuals, catalogs, brochures, etc.).
• Create and maintain style sheets, including paragraph styles, character styles, object styles, table styles, and nested/grepped styles.
• Establish and implement grid systems, master pages, and typographic hierarchies that ensure brand and design consistency.
• Collaborate with designers, editors, and production teams to gather requirements and refine templates based on user feedback.
• Ensure templates support efficient production workflows, especially for long documents and data-driven content (e.g., XML or CSV imports).
• Optimize templates for both print and digital output, including PDF, EPUB, and interactive formats.
• Provide documentation or training on how to use the templates effectively within the team or with external collaborators.
• Stay updated on Adobe InDesign updates, scripting tools, and typesetting best practices.

Requirements:

• Expert-level proficiency in Adobe InDesign, including long-document layout and automation techniques.
• Strong grasp of typography, page layout, publishing standards, and print production workflows.
• Deep understanding of style-based formatting, automation, and best practices in InDesign.
• Experience creating modular, reusable templates with fully defined style sheets.
• Solid grasp of print production and/or digital publishing workflows.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple template projects simultaneously.
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to design consistency and quality.
• Familiarity with publishing standards (e.g., for books, reports, marketing collateral) and export settings for various outputs.
• Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, especially Illustrator and Photoshop, is a plus.
• Experience with XML workflows, data merge, scripting, or InDesign automation tools is an advantage.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Familiarity with InDesign scripting (JavaScript, GREP), data merge, or XML workflows.
• Working knowledge of other Adobe Creative Cloud apps (e.g., Illustrator, Photoshop).
• Experience in publishing, education, corporate communications, or marketing design.
• Portfolio or samples of past InDesign templates and layout work.
