Role & responsibilities

Job Purpose

To ensure a safe, compliant, and hazard-free hospital environment by implementing safety practices related to operations, hazardous materials, infrastructure, and staff training. The Safety Officer will lead safety monitoring, incident prevention, emergency readiness, and cross-departmental coordination.

1. General Safety Responsibilities

l Conduct daily safety rounds across all hospital departments and report hazards.

l Assist in fire drills, evacuation plans, and emergency response training.

l Monitor biomedical waste management as per regulatory requirements.

l Investigate minor incidents and report findings to the Safety Manager.

l Ensure safe storage and use of chemicals and medical gases.

l Maintain comprehensive safety records, and incident documentation.

l Conduct inspections of electrical systems to identify potential safety risks.

l Identify fire hazards including heat sources, faulty wiring, and flammable materials.

l Supervise facade cleaning and work-at-height activities ensuring safe practices.

l Conduct regular safety audits and verify corrective action implementation.

l Identify and mitigate workplace risks across hospital zones.

l Provide safety awareness and compliance training to hospital employees.

2. Hazmat (Hazardous Materials) Safety Responsibilities

l Ensure chemical containers are properly labeled with hazard pictograms, signal words, and SDS-compliant details.

l Maintain an updated Chemical Inventory List including hazard classification and PPE requirements.

l Oversee the presence and functionality of eye wash stations, safety showers, and spill response kits.

Conduct Hazmat safety training for staff on spill management and chemical handling.

Ensure correct storage, segregation, and disposal of hazardous chemicals as per safety regulations.

Coordinate with clinical, lab, housekeeping, and maintenance teams for safe chemical handling.

Investigate any chemical exposure events and ensure preventive actions are in place.

Monitor and maintain Hazmat cabinets and ensure access to updated Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

3. Construction, Renovation & Maintenance Safety Responsibilities

Monitor safety compliance during construction, renovation, and civil works within hospital premises.

Enforce the Permit-to-Work (PTW) system for hot work, working at height, confined space entry, etc.

Supervise high-risk tasks such as facade cleaning, external building maintenance

Ensure safe practices during hot work (e.g., welding, cutting, grinding) with fire safety measures in place.

Oversee lifting operations, ensuring equipment is certified and operators are trained.

Verify the use of proper fall protection equipment such as full-body harnesses and anchor points.

Conduct risk assessments and approve Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Method Statements for high-risk jobs.

Ensure barricading, signage, and controlled access around construction zones to protect staff and patients.

l Coordinate contractor safety briefings and toolbox talks prior to starting any job.

Preferred candidate profile

Any Graduate with certification in Fire and safety

Minimum 2 years of Experience
