HOD – Railway Marketing: Core Job Responsibilities

1. Strategic Planning & Business Development

  • Develop and implement

    marketing and business strategies

    to increase railway freight and passenger business.
  • Identify

    new markets, commodities, routes, and customer segments

    for rail transportation.
  • Conduct

    market research

    , analyze industry trends, and benchmark competition.
  • Formulate annual business plans, revenue targets, and growth strategies.

2. Customer Acquisition & Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with

    key customers

    , industries, logistics providers, and government bodies.
  • Lead customer negotiations for freight rates, contracts, and long-term agreements.
  • Monitor customer satisfaction and ensure service quality improvements.

3. Coordination with Operations & Commercial Teams

  • Work closely with operations, planning, commercial, and pricing teams to ensure

    seamless service delivery

  • Coordinate with Indian Railways/rail authorities for approvals, siding permissions, rake allotments, etc.
  • Ensure alignment between marketing commitments and operational capabilities.

4. Revenue Management & Pricing

  • Monitor revenue performance and take corrective actions to meet targets.
  • Optimize rake utilization, loadability, and turnaround for maximum profitability.

5. Product & Service Development

  • Develop and promote new rail-based logistics solutions (e.g., container trains, parcel services, multimodal logistics).
  • Innovate bundled services (first-mile, last-mile, warehousing, documentation).
  • Assess feasibility of new routes, terminals, or sidings.

6. Regulatory & Policy Interface

  • Stay updated with government policies, railway circulars, and tariff changes.
  • Represent the organization in

    railway meetings, policy discussions, and industry forums

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.

7. Team Leadership & Performance Management

  • Lead and mentor the railway marketing team across regions.
  • Set KPIs, drive performance, and ensure continuous training and skill development.

8. Reporting & Analytics

  • Prepare regular reports on:
    • Market performance
    • Customer acquisition

9. Promotional Activities

  • Oversee branding, promotional campaigns, trade fairs, industrial visits, and customer engagement programs.
  • Develop marketing materials, case studies, and digital content relevant to railway offerings.

10. Risk Management

  • Identify risks related to demand, competition, operations, or regulatory changes.
  • Develop mitigation strategies for business continuity.
