Job Description

. Materials Planning & Control

  • Develop and execute material planning strategies aligned with shipbuilding and repair schedules.
  • Ensure timely availability of steel, pipes, machinery, outfitting items, electrical & automation equipment.
  • Monitor MRP, inventory levels, and project-wise material consumption.
  • Prevent material shortages, excess inventory, and obsolescence.

2. Procurement & Vendor Management

  • Lead procurement of indigenous and imported materials, equipment, and spares.
  • Finalize vendor sourcing strategies, RFQs, techno-commercial evaluations, and negotiations.
  • Develop and manage strategic vendors for marine-grade materials and class-approved equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with classification societies (ABS, DNV, LR, IRS, BV, etc.).

3. Project & Yard Coordination

  • Coordinate closely with planning, production, engineering, QA/QC, and project teams.
  • Support critical path materials planning for dry dock, new build, and repair projects.
  • Address material bottlenecks impacting vessel delivery timelines.

4. Logistics, Import & Export

  • Oversee inbound and outbound logistics, including heavy lifts and oversized cargo.
  • Manage import/export documentation, customs clearance, duty exemptions, and bonded stores.
  • Optimize freight costs and logistics timelines for project materials.

5. Inventory & Stores Management

  • Oversee central and site stores operations within the shipyard.
  • Implement effective inventory control systems, FIFO/FEFO, and stock audits.
  • Ensure proper handling, preservation, and traceability of materials.

6. Cost Control & Budgeting

  • Prepare and manage materials budgets for shipyard projects.
  • Drive cost reduction through strategic sourcing, alternate materials, and long-term contracts.
  • Monitor material cost variance and report to management.

7. Compliance, Systems & Governance

  • Ensure adherence to company policies, safety, environmental, and statutory regulations.
  • Implement ERP/MRP systems (SAP / Oracle / Shipyard-specific ERP).
  • Support internal and external audits related to materials and procurement.

8. Team Leadership

  • Lead and mentor procurement, planning, logistics, and stores teams.
  • Define KPIs, conduct performance reviews, and build a high-performing materials function.
  • Drive continuous improvement and best practices in SCM.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering (Mechanical / Marine / Production) or equivalent.
  • Post-graduate qualification in Materials / SCM preferred.
  • 1520+ years

    of experience in materials management within

    shipyards / heavy engineering / marine industry

    .
  • Strong exposure to shipbuilding, ship repair, dry dock operations, and marine procurement.
