A Commis 1 Chef is a skilled junior cook responsible for preparing, cooking, and presenting high-quality dishes in accordance with the kitchen’s standards. This role supports senior chefs, ensures kitchen operations run smoothly, and maintains high food safety and hygiene practices.

Key Responsibilities1. Food Preparation & Cooking

  • Prepare and cook dishes according to standard recipes, portion sizes, and quality guidelines.
  • Assist in preparing ingredients, mise en place, sauces, stocks, and garnishes.
  • Ensure all food items are cooked and presented to the highest quality.

2. Kitchen Operations

  • Support Chef de Partie in day-to-day operations of the assigned section (e.g., hot kitchen, cold kitchen, grill, pastry).
  • Work efficiently to maintain workflow during busy service periods.
  • Monitor stock levels and communicate needs to senior chefs.

3. Food Safety & Hygiene

  • Follow all food handling, sanitation, and hygiene protocols (HACCP or equivalent).
  • Maintain cleanliness of workstations, equipment, and storage areas.
  • Ensure proper labeling, storage, and rotation of ingredients (FIFO).

4. Teamwork & Coordination

  • Collaborate closely with chefs and other kitchen staff to ensure timely service.
  • Assist and guide Commis II / Commis III when needed.
  • Communicate effectively about any issues, shortages, or delays.

5. Quality Control

  • Check the freshness and quality of ingredients before use.
  • Ensure dishes meet the restaurant’s presentation and taste standards.
  • Suggest improvements to dishes or processes when appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or certification in Culinary Arts or related field.
  • Minimum 1–2 years’ experience in a professional kitchen (preferred).
  • Knowledge of cooking techniques, ingredients, and kitchen equipment.
  • Strong knife skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong sense of responsibility and a passion for cooking.
  • Ability to follow instructions and adapt to fast-paced environments.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for long periods.
  • Ability to lift moderately heavy items (up to 20–25 kg).
  • Comfortable working in a hot, fast-paced environment.

Job Type: Full-time
