Freelance Senior Power BI Architect (Azure / Databricks)

About the Role

We are looking for a highly skilled Freelance Power BI Architect to support enterprise-scale BI projects on a part-time basis. This role involves 3–4 hours per month on working days and requires advanced technical skills, architectural vision, and the ability to design user-centric reporting solutions for large datasets.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and maintain centralized, governed Power BI datasets (semantic layers) for self-service analytics.
• Build and optimize data models (star schema, snowflake) using Import, DirectQuery, and composite models.
• Write advanced DAX calculations focused on efficiency and scalability.
• Architect ETL/ELT pipelines leveraging Azure Data Lake, Databricks, and Azure Data Factory.
• Handle large-scale datasets (hundreds of millions of records) with strategies like pre-aggregations, incremental refresh, materialized views, and partitioning.
• Optimize performance and concurrency in DirectQuery scenarios.
• Define and enforce governance best practices: RLS, naming conventions, dataset certification, workspace structures, and CI/CD for deployments.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (data engineers, analysts, SMEs) for intuitive and reliable reporting.
• Assist in migration projects from legacy BI tools (e.g., BusinessObjects) to Power BI.

Required Skills & Experience

• Advanced Power BI expertise: data modeling, DAX, dataflows, RLS, deployment pipelines.
• Hands-on experience with Azure Data Lake, Azure Databricks, and Azure Data Factory.
• Strong experience with large-scale datasets and performance tuning.
• Strong SQL skills (Oracle, Teradata, or Databricks SQL).
• Experience in semantic layer design and creating governed enterprise datasets.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Azure Synapse or Microsoft Fabric.
• Prior experience in BusinessObjects to Power BI migrations.
• Knowledge of DevOps/CI-CD for Power BI deployments.
