Division: Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

About Turno : Turno is building the future of clean energy by enabling widespread adoption of electric mobility and energy storage solutions. As we expand into residential, commercial, and grid-balancing Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), we are setting up a new battery division to design, validate, and deliver world-class systems. We are looking for a BESS Design & Systems Integration Engineer to join our core team. This role will be pivotal in designing, integrating, testing, and commissioning containerized BESS solutions to meet functional, safety, and performance requirements across diverse applications.

Key Responsibilities

1. System Design & Requirements

• Define, document, and maintain system-level requirements for BESS functionality, safety, diagnostics, and compliance.

• Perform sizing, selection, and certification of battery systems, including packs, modules, BMS, HVAC, fire suppression, AC/DC panels, PCS, and EMS.

• Ensure compliance with global standards and certifications, including AIS 156, UL 9540, IEC, and IEEE.

• Create and maintain detailed CAD models, BOMs, and technical drawings/specifications for BESS projects.

2. Product Integration & Development

• Lead integration of sub-systems (BMS, HVAC, fire detection & suppression, PCS, EMS, AC/DC panels) into containerized BESS solutions.

• Design and validate thermal management systems, structural layouts, and fire safety mechanisms.

• Support R&D and New Product Development (NPD) for BESS, ESS, and mobility applications.

• Collaborate with suppliers to evaluate subsystem designs, manufacturing processes, and quality systems.

• Identify and develop local vendors for cost optimization of BESS sub-components (container, HVAC, fire safety, panels).

3. Testing, Validation, and Commissioning

• Prepare and execute Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and commissioning plans for BESS and microgrid projects.

• Conduct system-level validation and performance testing (thermal, structural, vibrational, and electrical).

• Perform root-cause analysis for hardware/software issues identified during validation or field operation.

• Analyse battery performance data from lab and field trials, and propose design improvements. • Document and continuously improve commissioning, testing, and quality procedures.

4. EMS Development & Control Logic

• Contribute to EMS control logic development and validation for applications such as renewable firming, frequency regulation, energy shifting, reactive power compensation, black start, and microgrid stability.

• Use simulation tools (MATLAB/Simulink, ANSYS) for modelling, system design, and validation. • Support SCADA and monitoring system integration for grid-connected deployments.

5. Collaboration and Project Execution

• Collaborate with internal teams (design, SCM, manufacturing, finance, vendors, and clients) to ensure on-time, cost-effective delivery of BESS solutions.

• Track project progress against baselines and accepted cost estimates (ACE) to ensure delivery without cost overruns.

• Lead technical discussions with customers, suppliers, and global stakeholders.

• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance across disciplines.

• Support project management with documentation, validation milestones, and supplier coordination.

Qualifications & Experience

• Education: Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, or related engineering field.

• Experience: 58 years in BESS design, system integration, testing, and commissioning, with exposure to utility-scale (10 MWh 250 MWh), C&I, and microgrid projects.

• Overseas exposure to global best practices in BESS design and deployment (e.g., NEC, Siemens, Hanwha Energy) is highly desirable.

Technical Skills

• Strong expertise in Lithium-Ion chemistries (LFP, NMC) and exposure to emerging technologies (Metal-Air, Al-Air).

• Hands-on knowledge of BESS product integration (BMS, HVAC, fire suppression, PCS, EMS, AC/DC panels).

• Proficiency in SolidWorks, ANSYS, MATLAB/Simulink, and related design/simulation tools.

• Experience with EMS/SCADA systems and control logic validation.

• Skilled in preparing and executing FAT, SAT, and commissioning procedures.

• Knowledge of functional safety standards and compliance (AIS 156, UL, IEC, IEEE).
