Academic Counsellor

Role & responsibilities

• Student counselling:

  Provide one-on-one and group counselling to help students identify their strengths, weaknesses, and goals, and assist with developing strategies for academic and personal success.

• Career and course guidance:

  Advise students on selecting appropriate courses and career paths, and research career options for them.

• Application and admissions assistance:

  Guide students through the college and university application process, including preparing for entrance exams and helping with applications and paperwork.

• Collaboration:

  Work with parents, teachers, and administrators to develop plans and address any potential learning or behavioral issues.

• Workshops and resources:

  Organize and conduct workshops on topics like study skills, career readiness, and college applications. Inform students and families about available resources like tutoring or mentoring.

• Record keeping:

  Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions, assessments, and progress.

• Staying informed:

  Stay up-to-date with educational trends, policies, and procedures to provide relevant and timely guidance.

Preferred candidate profile

Education: Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field.

Communication and interpersonal skills: Strong verbal and written communication, active listening, and the ability to build rapport with students, parents, and staff.

Empathy and problem-solving: The ability to understand students' needs and concerns, identify issues, and help them find solutions.

Organizational skills: The ability to manage multiple students, deadlines, and administrative tasks effectively.

Technical skills: Proficiency in using computers, including Microsoft Word and Excel, and internet research skills.

Experience: Prior experience in an academic advising, counselling, or related role is often preferred.
