Job Overview

The British Council has been operating in India since 1948. Our vision is of a bilateral relationship strengthened by improved economic, social and cultural opportunities for the next generation of young people in India.We work in arts, education and by sharing the English language and increasingly focus on transformative programmes online (with the aim of reaching of tens of millions of people in 2017 and more in future years) and through partnerships in States across the country. In 2016-17 we engaged with almost 3.2m people through our operations and libraries in New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai and through centres in Ahmedabad.

Role Purpose

To maintain and enhance professional development and academic quality within the teaching centre, the role focuses on managing in-house teacher development programmes and providing ongoing support to ensure continuous improvement. It also promotes and upholds high standards of teaching, enabling effective learning and fostering a culture of excellence among educators.In addition, the role is committed to providing learners with a rewarding and stimulating English language learning experience. It further contributes to the broader aims of the British Council by supporting its cultural relations mission and strengthening its impact within the community.

Main Accountabilities

Teaching and Student Support:

Plan and deliver high-quality English lessons that meet the needs of different learners and learning styles. Monitor student progress, give regular feedback, and encourage students to take responsibility for their learning. Complete all teaching-related administrative tasks to the required standards.

Course and Professional Development

:Work with the teaching team to develop, review, and improve courses, materials, and services. Take part in professional development to maintain high teaching standards. New teachers must complete the mentoring programme within six months and show all required skills and behaviours of a Core Teacher within two years.

Community, Customer Service and Safeguarding

: Help build strong relationships by supporting students’ understanding of modern UK culture. Assist with local marketing and contribute to excellent customer service in the teaching centre. Follow all safeguarding, equality, diversity, health, and safety guidelines at all times.

Qualifications And Experience

  • University degree ( in any discipline)
  • TEFL-I qualification (CELTA or Trinity Certificate TESOL)
  • Recognised diploma in EFL (i.e. DELTA or Trinity Diploma TESOL)
  • 2 years post-certificate i.e. CELTA/Trinity cert TESOL experience, in an internationally recognised English language teaching institute.
  • Experience in teaching relevant age groups
    • Early Years aged 2 to 5 (100+hours)
    • Primary aged 6 to 10 (100+ hours)
    • Lower Secondary aged 11 to 14 (100+ hours)
    • Upper Secondary aged 15 to 17 (100+ hours) (or willingness to acquire experience under supervision as soon as possible)
    • Adults General English 18+ (800+ hours)

Other Information

  • Salary: Annual pay scale between 570,000 INR - 1,066,000 INR (depending on qualification and work experience).
  • Annual Leave: Annual leave entitlement is 21 working days in a calendar year and 11 Public Holidays each calendar year
  • Medical Allowances: Group Medical Insurance policy of INR 500,000 as a family floater amount.
  • Location: Delhi
  • Contract Duration: 24 Months
  • Contract Hours: 40 hours/week
  • Tentative start date: April 2026
  • Work schedule: Teaching takes place all through the week, and teachers work 5 days, usually including Saturday and Sunday. Weekends are normally consecutive days, but this is not guaranteed. Evening classes are common during the week, and early morning or evening classes are common throughout the week.
  • Local restrictions on employment: Applicants must have the right to work in India. The roles are open for ONLY Indian nationals
  • Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card holders will need have, or be able to obtain, a valid special work permit issued from the Government of India (GOI) to work in the British High Commission (BHC). BHC will not be able to sponsor work visas or obtain/ assist with the special work permit from GOI. Offers of employment made to OCI card holders will be conditional upon candidates obtaining a special work permit. Note: For requisite special permission to take up employment in any foreign Diplomatic Missions in India, OCI Cardholder must visit https://ociservices.gov.in
