Technical Knowledge & Analysis: In-depth understanding of swimming techniques, strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly), and rules. Ability to analyze, identify, and correct faults in real-time.
Patience and Empathy: Understanding individual needs, fostering a positive environment, and managing swimmer frustration.
Organization: Scheduling, keeping, and updating team records and monitoring progress.
Adaptability: Tailoring coaching styles to different skill levels and personalities.
Relevant coaching certifications and, in many cases, valid lifeguard certification.
Knowledge of nutrition and health to support athlete performance.
Safety and Risk Management: Proficiency in lifesaving techniques, first aid/CPR certification, and ensuring a safe pool environment.
Communication and Motivation: Ability to deliver clear instructions, provide positive reinforcement, and build rapport with swimmers of all ages.
Program Planning and Periodization: Designing workout sets based on energy zones (aerobic, anaerobic), managing training density and volume, and long-term goal setting.
Physical and Mental Coaching: Developing strength and endurance while building mental toughness through visualization and goal-setting.
