Job Description

Department: Intensive Care Unit (ICU) – Obstetrics & Gynecology
Reports to: Head of Nursing / Medical Superintendent

Job Summary:

The Senior ICU In charge is responsible for managing the operations of the ICU in a maternity hospital, ensuring high standards of critical care for obstetric and neonatal patients. The role includes supervising ICU nursing staff, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and implementing evidence-based protocols to improve patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities: Clinical & Operational Oversight

  • Supervise and lead ICU staff in delivering care to critically ill obstetric and neonatal patients.
  • Ensure 24/7 readiness of ICU for emergency admissions.
  • Monitor patient progress and participate in clinical rounds with physicians.
  • Enforce infection control protocols and ensure hygiene and safety compliance.
  • Review and oversee critical patient care plans, including ventilator and medication management.

Staff Management

  • Supervise ICU nurses and support staff, ensuring appropriate skill mix and shift coverage.
  • Mentor, train, and evaluate ICU staff performance.
  • Organize regular training and simulation drills for emergency response.
  • Handle conflict resolution, staff grievances, and team motivation.

Coordination & Communication

  • Liaise with obstetricians, neonatologists, anesthetists, and other departments for smooth ICU functioning.
  • Ensure proper handovers and documentation for shift changes.
  • Communicate effectively with patients’ families regarding prognosis and care.

Quality & Compliance

  • Monitor quality indicators, audit ICU practices, and implement improvements.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and incident reports.
  • Ensure compliance with NABH/JCI standards and hospital SOPs.
  • Participate in mortality and morbidity reviews.

Emergency & Crisis Management

  • Take the lead in Code Blue, maternal collapse, or neonatal resuscitation situations.
  • Manage ICU during high-risk deliveries and post-operative complications.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Education: B.Sc. Nursing or GNM (Mandatory); Post-basic or M.Sc. Nursing preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 5–7 years in ICU nursing, with at least 2–3 years in a supervisory role; maternity or NICU/Obstetric ICU experience preferred.
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS (Mandatory); PALS or NRP (preferred).

Working Conditions:

  • Rotational shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
