Mechanical Engineer

Role & responsibilities

1. Lifting Planning & Execution

• Prepare detailed

  lifting plans

  , including load calculations, rigging configurations, equipment selection, and risk assessment.
• Evaluate load weight, center of gravity, lifting radius, crane capacity charts, and environmental conditions before any lift.
• Ensure all lifting activities follow

  LOLER, ASME, OSHA, and site-specific safety standards

  .

2. Rigging Supervision & Technical Guidance

• Inspect and verify the condition of all

  rigging tools, slings, shackles, beams, spreader bars, chain blocks

  , and lifting equipment before use.
• Provide technical guidance to rigging teams, operators, and helpers during

  critical, tandem, and heavy lifts

  .
• Ensure correct rigging methods are used based on load type, geometry, and lifting points.
  

3. Mechanical Installation & Commissioning

• Oversee the installation, alignment, and commissioning of

  mechanical equipment

  such as pumps, motors, gearboxes, conveyors, turbines, structural components, and rotating machinery.
• Review and interpret

  mechanical drawings, isometrics, GA drawings, alignment sheets

  , and technical specifications.
• Monitor mechanical assembly works and ensure proper torquing, leveling, and testing.
  

4. Equipment Inspection & Maintenance

• Conduct routine inspections of cranes, hoists, rigging gears, and mechanical systems.
• Identify mechanical faults, operational issues, and equipment failures, and ensure timely corrective actions.
• Maintain records of equipment fitness certificates, calibration reports, and maintenance logs.
  

5. Safety Compliance & Risk Management

• Perform

  Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Lifting Risk Assessments, Method Statements (LMS)

  , and ensure approval before work execution.
• Ensure all personnel are trained and certified for rigging, crane operation, and mechanical work as per project requirements.
• Enforce compliance with site safety rules such as

  LOTO, PTW, barricading, hazard control, PPE usage

  , and safe lifting procedures.

6. Coordination with Project & Engineering Teams

• Work closely with project managers, construction engineers, HSE teams, and crane vendors for planning and sequencing lifting activities.
• Ensure the mechanical installation works align with project schedules, quality requirements, and engineering specifications.
• Communicate daily progress, challenges, and resource requirements through

  daily/weekly progress reports

  .

7. Documentation & Reporting

• Prepare and maintain documents including

  lifting plans, rigging inspection reports, load testing certificates, mechanical installation checklists

  , and commissioning reports.
• Monitor and maintain

  rigging registers, equipment utilization reports, and material handling logs

  .
• Ensure all activities are documented as per QA/QC standards and contractual requirements.
  

8. Troubleshooting & Technical Problem-Solving

• Diagnose lifting and mechanical challenges and provide on-the-spot solutions to avoid delays.
• Analyze mechanical failures, develop preventive measures, and implement improvements.
• Support root cause analysis (RCA) for mechanical or lifting incidents.
  

9. Training & Team Leadership

• Conduct toolbox talks, safety inductions, and competency-based training for riggers and mechanical technicians.
• Mentor junior engineers and rigging crew on proper lifting techniques, mechanical installation standards, and safe work practices.
• Ensure team discipline, work allocation, and performance monitoring.
  

10. Quality Assurance

• Verify materials, lifting tools, and mechanical components as per approved QAP, WPS, and engineering specifications.
• Conduct pre-commissioning and commissioning quality checks to ensure all installations meet required technical standards.
• Liaise with QA/QC teams for inspection clearance and final handover.
