Maintenance senior fitter

Role Summary

The Senior Fitter (Maintenance) will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and overhauling mechanical equipment in the steel plant, ensuring minimum breakdowns and smooth plant operations. This role requires hands-on skills, leadership in guiding fitters/helpers, and adherence to safety and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance of mechanical equipment such as rolling mills, gearboxes, cranes, conveyors, pumps, compressors, and hydraulic systems.
• Diagnose faults, dismantle, repair, and assemble mechanical parts with precision.
• Supervise and guide junior fitters, helpers, and contract workers during maintenance jobs.
• Ensure planned shutdown and breakdown maintenance is executed as per schedule.
• Maintain records of maintenance activities, spare consumption, and downtime.
• Ensure compliance with safety standards, lockout-tagout (LOTO), and PPE usage during maintenance.
• Collaborate with production and electrical/instrumentation teams to minimize downtime.
• Suggest improvements for equipment reliability, performance, and cost reduction.
• Handle alignment, welding, grinding, and basic machining as required.
• Report abnormalities, recurring issues, and suggest corrective action to the Maintenance Engineer/Manager.

Skills & Competencies

• Strong knowledge of steel plant/rolling mill machinery.
• Hands-on expertise in fitting, assembly, and alignment jobs.
• Ability to read mechanical drawings, assembly layouts, and manuals.
• Basic knowledge of welding, gas cutting, and fabrication.
• Problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Team handling and leadership ability.
• Safety-conscious and disciplined approach.

Qualifications & Experience

• ITI Fitter / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (preferred).
• Minimum 5–6 years of experience in heavy mechanical maintenance, preferably in steel/rolling mills or process industries.
• Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems will be an advantage.

Work Conditions

• Plant-based role with shift duties.
• Exposure to high temperature, dust, noise, and heavy machinery.
• Must strictly follow safety protocols.
