Job Description

Spatial Data Management: Manage and analyze spatial data related to residential and commercial buildings, land parcels, and geographic reference layers (e.g., addresses, road networks, and administrative boundaries).
GIS Tool Utilization: Utilize GIS software (such as Esri ArcGIS or QGIS) and spatial databases to manage large datasets of building locations and attributes. Develop and use geospatial analyses and mapping workflows to inform census planning and operations, including generating maps and reports that integrate building data with other geographic layers
Data Quality & Standards: Ensure data quality, metadata consistency, and alignment with data mapping standards. This involves enforcing data integrity checks, maintaining consistent coordinate reference systems, and updating metadata documentation so that all geospatial datasets meet accuracy and consistency requirements
Cross-Team Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams – including field operations personnel, data analysts, IT specialists, and statisticians – to integrate geospatial data into various workflows and analyses.
Key Qualifications
Education (this would be ideal but not necessary) : Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Cartography, or a related field (a master’s degree is a plus), providing a strong foundation in geospatial concepts and analysis
GIS Technical Skills: Proven proficiency in GIS software and tools, especially Esri ArcGIS and/or QGIS, for creating and maintaining spatial databases, performing geoprocessing, and producing maps and analytical reports. Experience with spatial data infrastructures and GIS scripting or automation (Python, ModelBuilder) is advantageous.
Domain Experience: Demonstrated experience working with spatial datasets related to buildings and addresses – for example, managing building footprint data, address registers, or cadastral land parcel information – and integrating these with administrative boundary layers and other reference data
Data Quality & Metadata Knowledge: Solid understanding of geospatial data quality standards and metadata management. Ability to ensure high accuracy and logical consistency in datasets (e.g., verifying spatial accuracy, maintaining projection consistency, and keeping thorough metadata records for geographic files)
Communication & Teamwork: Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset. Able to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams and external partners, translating technical GIS information into clear insights for non-technical colleagues, and coordinating with field staff and analysts to support the overall census mission
