Manufacturing Tooling Engineer
- Implement Best Cost Country Sourcing strategy for assembly tooling
- Direct the implementation of tooling best business practices
- Responsible for tooling investment strategy for Tenneco North America Clean Air. Shared responsibility with counterparts at other global regions
- Support or manage (as assigned) the technical direction & coordination for tooling installations & start-ups
- Lead functional tooling design reviews between the selected tooling supplier, MET responsible engineer, and the plant manufacturing team
- Create, maintain and update program specific tooling requirements and forecast this information quarterly to the tooling supply base
- Define tooling touch points (3-2-1s) based on the manufacturing drawings GD&T structure and tolerancing utilizing the predefined manufacturing process
- Ensure tooling suppliers achieve Tenneco standards and support capital productivity initiatives, forecasts and sign off criteria
- Assess and evaluate the same suppliers to provide an objective scale for performance and feedback to capital/tooling purchasing
- Implement and ensure proper handshake of process, equipment and tooling into receiving plants
- Tooling supplier development close to our facilities (i.e. Mexico)
- Ensure prototype builds follow prototype with Production intent development is accurate and encompassing in order to launch programs on time and within budget
- Continuous improvement and product initiatives to achieve productivity initiatives including design to cost and lean manufacturing
- Identify next generation of Process/ Equipment / Tooling development for manufacturing to support cost reduction opportunities.
- Utilize technical expertise to implement/oversee the implementation of cost reduction ideas
- Other duties as assigned.
Education / Experience / Skills:
Education / Experience
:
- 5+ years related manufacturing engineering experience.
- Bachelors degree (or Journeyman Toolmaker with Associate degree) in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering
- Experience working with equipment and tooling suppliers, creating statement of work, awarding suppliers and following progress through launch.
Skills:
- Knowledge and understanding of Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing and Design for Manufacturability
- Demonstrated ability to identify problems and opportunities, develop plans and successfully implement solutions
- Self-motivated, ability to effectively prepare and deliver technical reports and presentations, ability to establish and maintain budgets, Project management skills
- Ability to make effective presentations to a wide variety of audiences including senior managers, customers and employee groups
Required Specialized Skills/Knowledge
- Expert in exhaust industry tooling and manufacturing methods including bending and exhaust welding. Expert of exhaust manufacturing best practices and standards in North America.
- Ability to develop new suppliers to meet tooling expectations and timing. Specifically develop India tool suppliers to meet North America standards.
- Trained and efficient using GD&T.
- Can apply GD&T and correlating to fixture and gage designs.
- Use CAD systems to develop tooling designs.
- Develop SOWs, RFQs, conducting gage correlations, gage R&Rs, runoffs and installation to Tenneco standards.
- Ability to conduct detailed design reviews of tooling. Coordinate with India based tooling manufacturers and end using plants in North America.
- Develop detailed tooling timelines using overall program timing. Manage tooling spending to program financial targets.
Travel
:
- Ability to travel in support of job function 25-40%(NACA facilities, suppliers etc.). International travel required.
