Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and hardworking Commis Chef to join our culinary team. This entry-level position is an excellent opportunity for an aspiring chef to develop foundational skills and gain hands-on experience in a professional kitchen environment. The Commis Chef will work directly under the guidance of a Chef de Partie and other senior chefs, assisting with a variety of tasks to ensure the smooth operation of their assigned station.

Responsibilities

  • Food Preparation:

  • Perform basic food preparation tasks, including washing, peeling, chopping, dicing, and portioning vegetables, fruits, and meats.
  • Accurately measure and mix ingredients according to recipes and senior chef instructions.
  • Prepare basic sauces, salads, and garnishes.
  • Ensure all ingredients are prepped and ready for service in a timely manner.
  • Kitchen Operations:

  • Assist the Chef de Partie with cooking and plating dishes during service.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary workstation at all times.
  • Assist with receiving and storing deliveries, ensuring all items are checked for quality and freshness.
  • Monitor and rotate stock to prevent spoilage and waste.
  • Handle and store food items according to food safety and hygiene regulations.
  • Maintenance & Cleaning:

  • Perform general kitchen cleaning duties, including sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing surfaces and equipment.
  • Operate and clean kitchen equipment, such as ovens, stoves, and mixers, as instructed.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or maintenance issues to a senior chef immediately.
  • Learning & Development:

  • Actively learn and develop culinary skills and techniques from senior kitchen staff.
  • Demonstrate a strong willingness to learn and accept feedback.
  • Rotate through different kitchen sections (e.g., sauce, fish, vegetables) to gain broad experience.

Qualifications

  • Experience:

  • Prior experience in a kitchen setting (e.g., as a kitchen porter or trainee) is advantageous.
  • Experience from a culinary internship or formal training program is a plus.
  • Skills:

  • Basic knowledge of cooking techniques and food preparation.
  • Strong passion for food and the culinary arts.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards (HACCP certification is a plus).

Education
