About Prerana

Prerana is a civil society organization that started its work in 1986 by addressing the issue of intergenerational trafficking into the sex trade in Kamathipura, the then-largest red-light area in Asia. Prerana strives to ensure the optimum protection of children. This is reflected in its broad spectrum of interventions that provide a continuum of care by addressing issues of child protection in parallel with anti-human trafficking. Since its inception, Prerana’s pioneering efforts have been instrumental in supporting victims through the entire cycle from prevention to rehabilitation/repatriation. Over a period of three decades, Prerana has been successful in addressing larger issues around sex trafficking, gender-based violence, child sexual abuse, and child protection and has been instrumental in bringing policy-level changes.

About the Project

Project Aashiyana has been conceptualized as a partner program under the Transform NEEV Collective – a collective of seven implementing partners aiming to ensure that children are provided with all opportunities to thrive in families and create a replicable and scalable model of Alternative Care in Maharashtra.

The project aims to strengthen communities and enhance community-based child protection mechanisms. Focusing on empowering children and families, and strengthening marginalized communities to provide care for children and prevent the families and children from approaching the Juvenile Justice system for institutionalized care, shelter, and development services for children.

The project aims at promoting alternative, non- institutional, community-based care systems for children and has selected three communities which are marginalized and vulnerable in Mumbai Suburban and Thane district for intervention. The project is currently functional in two communities – Sathe Nagar (Mankhurd) and Turbhe Stores.

Context of the Role

We are looking for an Assistant Project Manager to engage with children, families, and child protection systems. At Prerana, we actively support existing child protection mechanisms and ensure that all our initiatives are centered on the voices of the children we work with. Their thoughts and opinions are actively incorporated into all our efforts toward child protection.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist the Project Manager in coordinating and implementing all program activities in line with the project plan and objectives.
• Support the team in conducting needs assessments, developing individual case plans, and ensuring their effective implementation.
• Assist the team in collecting, organizing, and documenting information required for monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
• Maintain detailed records of individual case progress and other project-related activities.
• Work closely with the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Child Care Institutions (CCIs), and other child protection stakeholders to ensure coordinated support for children and their families.
• Conduct social investigation visits and prepare detailed social investigation reports as required under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.
• Provide assistance across project and organizational centers as needed.
• Actively contribute to the functioning of community centers through educational and outreach sessions, awareness drives, and capacity-building workshops.

Key Competencies

• A Master’s Degree in Social Work or related fields.
• A sound understanding of child protection in the Indian context.
• Comfort in working within low-income community settings and willingness to travel within Mumbai.
• Preferably 3–4 years of experience working with a field-based organization, with a fair understanding of the child protection space.
• Strong oral and written communication skills in Marathi, Hindi, and English.
