Job Summary

The VMC Setter / Programmer is responsible for setting up, programming, operating, and maintaining Vertical Machining Center (VMC) machines to produce precision components as per engineering drawings and quality standards. The role requires strong knowledge of CNC programming, tooling, fixtures, and machining processes to ensure efficient, accurate, and safe production.

Key Responsibilities

VMC Machine Setup

• Set up VMC machines according to job requirements and engineering drawings
• Install and align fixtures, jigs, and work holding devices
• Load and align tools, set tool offsets, and work offsets
• Perform dry runs and trial cuts to ensure program accuracy

CNC Programming

• Create, edit, and optimize CNC programs using G-code / M-code
• Develop programs for complex profiles, drilling, tapping, milling, and contouring operations
• Modify existing programs to improve cycle time and machining efficiency
• Use CAM software (if applicable) to generate machining programs

Machine Operation & Monitoring

• Operate VMC machines during initial production runs
• Monitor machining operations to ensure accuracy and quality
• Adjust cutting parameters such as feed, speed, and depth of cut
• Ensure machines run within safe operating limits

Quality Control & Inspection

• Read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and specifications
• Inspect components using measuring instruments such as vernier calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, and height gauges
• Ensure components meet dimensional and surface finish requirements
• Identify defects and take corrective actions

Tooling & Process Improvement

• Select appropriate cutting tools and inserts based on material and operation
• Monitor tool wear and replace tools as required
• Suggest improvements to tooling, fixtures, and machining methods
• Reduce cycle time and minimize material wastage

Maintenance & Safety

• Perform basic machine maintenance and cleaning
• Report machine issues to maintenance or supervisors
• Follow safety procedures and company policies at all times
• Ensure proper handling of cutting tools and materials

Documentation & Reporting

• Maintain setup sheets, tool lists, and program documentation
• Record production data, rejection reports, and downtime reasons
• Support audits and quality inspections

Skills and Competencies

Technical Skills

• Strong knowledge of VMC machine operations
• Proficiency in CNC programming (G-code & M-code)
• Experience with Fanuc / Siemens / Heidenhain controllers
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T
• Knowledge of cutting tools, fixtures, and machining processes

Educational Qualifications

• Diploma, BE
• CNC / VMC programming certification is an added advantage

Experience Requirements

• 3 to 8 years of experience as a VMC Setter / Programmer
• Experience in precision machining and batch/production environments
• Exposure to different materials such as steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and alloys

Reporting Structure

• Reports to: Production Manager / CNC Supervisor
• Coordinates with: Quality, Maintenance, and Planning teams

• Machine utilization and productivity
• First-pass yield and rejection rate
• Program accuracy and cycle time optimization
• Tool life and material usage efficiency
