Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Patient Monitoring: Closely watch vitals, hemodynamic parameters (invasive lines, CVP, PA), ECG rhythms, ventilator settings, chest drains, urine output, and cardiac device function (pacemakers).
- Medication Management: Administer high-alert cardiac meds (inotropes, vasopressors, antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants, sedatives, insulin infusions).
- Emergency Response: Swiftly address complications like arrhythmias, low cardiac output, bleeding, respiratory distress, or cardiac tamponade.
- Procedural Assistance: Assist surgeons in the OR, manage post-op pain, support early mobilization, and help with procedures like IABP (Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump) management.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with cardiac surgeons, intensivists, perfusionists, and therapists on care plans.
- Documentation & Education: Maintain precise records and educate patients/families on post-op care.
- Infection Control: Ensure strict aseptic techniques and infection prevention.
Managing hypertension, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias and other heart conditions
- Evaluating and monitoring heart devices, such as pacemakers and defibrillators
- Performing a wide variety of cardiac tests, including stress tests, stress echocardiograms, exercise stress tests, PET/dipyridamole stress tests, and CT coronary angiograms
- Providing physical exams so as to diagnose chronic and acute cardiac diseases
- Interpreting laboratory results or cardiac tests
- Prescribing and managing cardiac medications and other therapies
- Educating patients on health maintenance and disease prevention
- A cardiothoracic intensive care nurse works in a highly specialized cardiothoracic intensive care unit (ICU) catering to the needs of patients requiring constant monitoring and whose clinical conditions are considered critical.
- The cardiothoracic intensive care nurse is adept at noting subtle hemodynamic changes that could lead to serious complications and providing immediate interventions as required.
- The ICU nurse is comfortable in operating and managing complex medical equipment such as IABP and telemetry monitors and works closely with physicians and unlicensed assistive personnel.
- Cardio pulmonary resuscitation & follow up care.
- Assist intubation, extubation and weaning.
- Perform on E.T & Tracheotomy suctioning & handling of high end equipments.

Skill Required
Essential Qualifications & Skills
- Valid Nursing License.
- Experience in ICU/CTVS/Critical Care (often 2+ years).
- Knowledge of critical care protocols, advanced cardiac life support.
- Proficiency with complex equipment (ventilators, monitors, IABP, etc.).
- Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Certification like CCRN is often preferred.
- Appropriate qualification and statutory nursing registration in the state – GNM/BSC/MSC
- Valid BLS-ACLS provider certificate.
