Collective Newsroom is looking to hire a motivated and outstanding Senior Video Journalist (Shoot/Edit) to work with BBC News Bangla out of India. This role will be responsible for an area of output, including editorial control, reporting, selection and compilation of material, production, leading teams and planning and implementing effective use of resources for BBC News Bangla, based in Kolkata. The role of Senior Video Journalist is crucial in delivering well-produced video content for the BBC’s website as well as social media platforms. The purpose of the role is primarily to initiate, gather and produce material for news, current affairs and general programming as well as routinely self-shooting and editing complete packages for use across multiple platforms.
The successful candidate will have experience of proven craft skills of a very high-level, including the ability to both shoot and edit video content independently or both television and digital platforms aimed particularly at a young audience. You should have a very strong editorial understanding of the Bengali audience in India as well as the digital media market in West Bengal and Northeast India. Strong command over the Bengali language is essential and knowledge of English is preferred.

BBC News Bangla is the Bengali language service of the BBC World Service and was set up in 1941 for Bengali audiences in South Asia and worldwide. It provides up-to-date news and current affairs, covering both domestic and international news stories and is multiplatform, with a multimedia website with a focus on digital video, text, interactivity for both desktop and mobile platforms, and TV news programme. The service aims to make international news relevant to Bengali speaking audiences in both Bangladesh and India, and aims at bringing quality, impartial, original journalism with news and current affairs to the Bengali speaking region.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities
- Responsible for filming, editing and producing a range of video, audio and digital content for BBC News Bangla website, social platforms, podcast and TV if required to the highest professional standards. You will be required to work with the editorial and planning teams.
- Shooting and editing material for long and short form programming, outside broadcasts, online, newsgathering in the field, live or recorded, often edited in the field, to feed material back to base, utilising the latest technology.
- Advise on all aspects of camera coverage and editing throughout the production process and be a constant source of imaginative and realistic alternative filming and editing treatments.
- May include travel at short notice, therefore flexibility is essential.
- May include the production and presentation of live or recorded programmes.
- May be required to present live or recorded content on online, social, TV or radio.
- Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
- At all times to carry out duties in accordance with the health and safety policy.
Requirements
Knowledge, skills, training and experience
- Strong knowledge of reading and writing in Bengali is essential.
- Good communication in English is desirable.
- Significant recent experience as a shoot-edit, with a good knowledge of production techniques for digital, social and video platforms with background in filming, editing and packaging content for digital and TV platforms.
- Relevant craft skills (camera work, lighting editing), together with excellent digital journalism knowledge.
- Ability to operate current broadcast technical equipment on location and at base, demonstrating a well-developed sense of visual awareness and a willingness to learn how to use new technology and kit.
- A broad understanding of the target audience is important.
- Good knowledge of West Bengal and north-east India political and social issues is desirable.
- Good Knowledge of geographical areas of West Bengal is essential.
- A high standard of editorial judgment and production skills based on substantial
- broadcast journalism experience.
- Pro-active approach in dealing with emergency situations and support social lead to bring out the best output.
- Contribute to the effective production of ground report with effective coordination and support to the reporting team.
- Maximise opportunities offered by existing and emerging technologies to their fullest extent.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of more than one team; resolving conflicts as necessary.
- Flexible and adaptable to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities and circumstances.
- Sound understanding of health and safety procedures and how they apply to broadcasting.
- Pro-active with professional understanding and collaborative approach towards teams, including production.
