Job Description

Submerged Arc Welder – Roles and Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) equipment according to specifications and work instructions.
  • Select and install appropriate flux, electrode wires, and welding parameters (voltage, amperage, travel speed) based on job requirements.
  • Interpret and follow blueprints, technical drawings, and weld symbols.
  • Prepare base materials through cleaning, grinding, or preheating as necessary.
  • Perform automatic or semi-automatic welding on structural components, pipes, tanks, or pressure vessels.
  • Monitor welds during operation to ensure proper penetration, bead profile, and fusion.
  • Conduct visual inspections and use measuring tools to ensure weld quality meets required specifications and tolerances.
  • Address and correct defects such as slag inclusions, porosity, undercuts, or lack of fusion.
  • Operate overhead cranes, manipulators, or welding tractors where needed to position heavy components.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment, adhering to company safety protocols and PPE usage.
  • Complete job documentation, such as weld logs, quality reports, or time sheets.

Technical & Operational Duties

  • Calibrate and adjust SAW equipment to maintain weld consistency across long seams.
  • Apply single-wire, twin-wire, or tandem wire welding techniques as needed.
  • Use backing bars, fixtures, or rotators to aid in positioning and welding.
  • Understand different joint designs (butt, fillet, groove) and adjust welding technique accordingly.
  • Monitor and maintain flux recovery and recycling systems.

Quality & Safety Compliance

  • Follow welding procedures in compliance with industry standards such as AWS, ASME, or ISO.
  • Perform or assist with non-destructive testing (NDT) preparation and documentation.
  • Identify and report any deviations from design specifications or quality concerns.
  • Participate in regular safety meetings, toolbox talks, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills

  • Proven experience operating Submerged Arc Welding systems in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Welding certifications (e.g., AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, or equivalent) preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications), and material standards.
  • Strong knowledge of welding metallurgy and weld defects.
  • Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with heavy fabrication equipment.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: ₹20,000.00 - ₹28,000.00 per month
