Safety Engineer/Officer

Position Overview:

The candidate will be responsible for implementing, monitoring, and improving safety systems related to gas, chemical, and process safety within a solar cell and module manufacturing and construction facility. The role requires strong knowledge of hazardous gases, chemicals, and applicable safety standards to ensure safe handling, storage, and usage across the plant.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Safety Management

i) Ensure compliance with all statutory and company EHS requirements related to hazardous gases and chemicals.

ii) Develop and implement SOPs, Work Permits, and Risk Assessments (JSA, HIRA, HAZOP) for chemical and gas systems.

iii) Monitor and ensure safe operation of Process Chemical Handling, Bulk Gas Systems, ETP Chemical, and Scrubbers.

iv) Conduct periodic inspections of gas & chemical areas, ensuring proper PPE usage, signage, and spill control measures.

2. Chemical & Gas Handling

i) Regular Inspection of unloading, storage, and transfer of hazardous and flammable gases & chemicals (e.g., HF, HCl, IPA, NH, TMA, Silane, N2O, H2O2, N2, O2 etc.).

ii) Oversee gas detection systems, emergency scrubbers, and interlocks.

iii) Review and maintain MSDS, inventory, and compatibility charts for all chemicals.

iv) Ensure training and competency of operators handling chemicals and gases.

3. Emergency Preparedness

i) Lead emergency response drills related to chemical/gas leaks or fires.

ii) Maintain readiness of SCBA sets, gas detectors, spill kits, and emergency showers.

iii) Coordinate with local authorities (GPCB, PESO, DISH) during audits or emergency situations.

4. Audits, Training & Documentation

i) Conduct internal EHS audits for chemical & gas systems.

ii) Prepare and maintain documentation for PESO, GPCB, and ISO 45001 requirements.

iii) Organize EHS training sessions for employees and contractors on chemical/gas safety.

iv) Support management in developing safety KPIs, near-miss reporting, and incident investigations.

Key Deliverables:

i) Full implementation of PSM framework within gas and chemical process areas.

ii) Zero incidents in gas and chemical handling operations.

iii) Compliance with PESO and statutory audits without major non-conformities.

iv) Enhanced employee safety awareness through effective training programs.

Professional Requirements:

i) 3-7 years of experience in EHS, preferably in solar cell/module, semiconductor, or chemical process industries.

ii) Proven expertise in Process Safety Management and hazardous chemical/gas system safety.

iii) Experience in incident investigation, root cause analysis, and CAPA implementation.

iv) Knowledge of process interlocks, gas detection systems, scrubber performance, and safety PLC systems.

v) Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.

vi) Experience liaising with regulatory authorities (PESO, GPCB, DISH) and handling statutory compliance documentation.

Educational Requirements:

i) B.E./B.Tech in Chemical / Environmental / Safety Engineering mandatory.

ii) Post Diploma / Advanced Diploma in Industrial Safety (as per Factory Act 1948) mandatory.

iii) Certification in Process Safety Management (PSM), HAZOP Facilitation, or Risk Assessment – preferred.

iv) Familiarity with ISO 45001, OSHA, NFPA, and CCPS standards.
