About Magic Bus

Founded in 1999, Magic Bus works with children and young people living in poverty, in India, taking them from a childhood full of challenges to a life with meaningful livelihoods. We equip children and young people in the age group of 12 to 18, with the skills and knowledge they need to grow up and move out of poverty. Children on the Magic Bus programme successfully fend off destabilizers such as child marriage and child labour to complete school and become first-generation salary earners having secure careers in the organised sector.

Our youth-centered Livelihoods Programme connects the aspirations and potential of young people to available market opportunities. We build their employability skills and map job potential based on individual strengths and mobility. We work with support structures like parents, teachers, the community at large and local government institutions to ensure social, emotional and economic well- being for all young people living in that area. Our approach mobilises the entire ecosystem available to the child or young person to create transformational change in their lives.

Current Context

Magic Bus today impacts the lives of 4, 50,000 adolescents and more than 40,000 youths directly and thousands of families indirectly. Our Programmes have brought in a paradigm shift for the many families who earlier were constrained by financial compulsions, cultural norms and other adverse living conditions.

While our efforts could bring school drop-out rate to below 5%, child marriage is slowly edging for extinction in the communities where we work. We envision ourselves playing a significant role in touching lives of 1.6 million adolescents and 3, 00,000 youths directly via our Childhood to Livelihood programme by the end of 2023. As we grow, each individual assumes a higher level accountability. In this context, we seek to strengthen the evaluation process as well as knowledge management of the organization.

• Build strong relationships with employers and education institutions / colleges ensuring effective referral, placement and monitoring systems are in place for youth.
• Support youth during their self-development and skills training ensuring trainees are placed in positive outcomes and placements are successful.

Specific tasks and responsibilities

• Support youth to achieve the skills training, mentoring and employer activities outlined in their individual Personal Development Plans.
• Deliver a sharp focus on achieving successful youth placements in work, training or further education and supporting youth to sustain these for 1 year.
• Effectively utilize and leverage partnerships at all levels
• Arrange job fair / placement drives / campus recruitment youth as well as market need
• Carry out 24 hour training module (covering industry overview, mock interview, other soft skills training) as per mandated curriculum
• Monitor youth’s performance and retention with employers.
• Support youth after their placements to ensure that they retain their engagement and sustain themselves in work or education placements for up to 1 year.
• Should have experience of handling placements in colleges and mobilising youth from colleges
• Have handled bulk placements and should be efficient in handling big numbers
• Act as a role model at all times demonstrating behaviour that displays the characteristics youth should develop to be successful in their chosen field.

Desired Competencies:

• Ability to build positive relationships with youth and motivate individuals to achieve defined targets of taking up work opportunities.
• Excellent team worker with strong oral and written communication skills including good level of professional English.
• Empathy- ability to work with youth
• Well organised working style with excellent time management skills.
• Willingness to work evenings and weekends occasionally as required by programme.
• Ability to collect and process delivery evidence and data in line with key performance indicators for the programme
• Strong negotiator and ability to manage relationships with colleges and employers

Qualification & Work experience

• Relevant degree or similar professional qualification from a reputed institution.
• Experience of either employability skills, job placement, youth development or vocational training programmes either directly or indirectly (desirable)
• Experience of reviewing progress against individual’s training programme targets (desirable)
• Experience of engaging with wider stakeholders like placement teams in colleges, students and communities.
• Experience of providing guidance to young people on a range of development issues.

Mobility requirements:

The role would be required to travel in line with the requirements of the project, various external stakeholders for representing Magic Bus on outside fora if required from time to time.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: ₹30,000.00 - ₹33,500.00 per month
