Job summary:

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Piping & Firefighting

Key accountabilities:

Technical Design and Engineering:

• Prepare piping layouts, routing, and general arrangement drawings (treatment plants, pump houses, pipelines, utility lines).
• Carry out pipe sizing calculations based on process and hydraulic requirements (flow, velocity, pressure drop).
• Develop isometric drawings, piping support details, and pipe rack arrangements. • Prepare of Piping support design & drawings.
• Select appropriate piping materials, valves, and fittings as per specifications (IS, AWWA, ASTM, ASME, BIS).
• Perform stress analysis and flexibility checks for above-ground piping.
• Preparation of mechanical general arrangement drawings showing piping,
• Preparation of specifications for piping system for municipal water and wastewater projects, including treatment facilities, pumping stations, and distribution systems.
• Prepare bills of quantities, piping layouts, overall plant layouts, and isometric drawings.
• Prepare technical specifications, datasheets for piping system including valve schedules, and other design deliverables like RFQ.
• Prepare detailed firefighting system designs (hydrant systems, sprinkler systems, foam systems, fire suppression, and detection).
• Calculate water demand, flow rates, pump sizing, and firewater storage capacity.
• Develop firefighting system drawings (GA, schematic, isometric, P&IDs).
• Develop piping layouts, pump room general arrangements, and valve chamber designs.
• Ensure compliance with NFPA, NBC, IS codes, and relevant local fire authority guidelines.
• Technical evaluation of Vendor offers for Piping & Firefighting System.
• Checking vendors equipment drawing & Technical specification as per tender requirement /client requirement.
• Support in preparation of tender documents.
• Ensure integration of piping design with process, civil, structural, electrical, and instrumentation requirements.
• Utilize and oversee the use of 2D and 3D CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Plant 3D, Navisworks Manage) for the development of plant general arrangement and piping layout drawings.
• Resolve clashes and incorporate design changes.
• Ensure all designs comply with relevant Indian/global standards, and national-state-municipal regulations.
• Knowledge of selection of material (MOC) of various components of equipment & piping.
• Preparation of BOQ with specification.
• Prepare and review technical specifications, datasheets, and schedules for firefighting equipment and instrumentation.
• Should have Technical Report writing skills.
• Should have excellent knowledge of using MS Excel, MS Word, PPT, Auto CAD.
• Knowledge of 2D and 3D drafting software such as AutoCAD, Navisworks, SmartPlant 3D, CAESAR and Open Plant Modeler preferred.
• Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, and client/consultant meetings.
• Knowledge of welding, fabrication, and installation practices will be an added advantage.

Project and team leadership:

• Interface with process & hydraulic engineers to ensure piping design meets functional and operational needs.
• Collaborate with project managers to develop project scopes, deliverables, schedules, and budgets, and ensure projects are executed on time and within budget.

• Meeting with Client and other stakeholders to get approval of the design, drawings and all other technical documents required to complete the project smoothly.
• Able to adopt cost effective / cost saving design.
• Capable of handling a team of 4 to 6 engineers/draftsman.
• Guiding and mentoring engineering /CAD team for quality delivery.
