Job summary:

Senior Instrumentation Design Engineer

Key accountabilities:

Technical Design and Engineering:

  • Experience to basic and detailed engineering of Instrumentation works.
  • Lead and deliver detailed instrumentation design packages for water treatment plants, sewage treatment plants, and pumping stations.
  • Act as

    discipline lead

    for instrumentation works within multidisciplinary teams (civil, process, mechanical, electrical).
  • Prepare and review

    P&IDs, control narratives, instrument index, I/O lists, loop diagrams, cable block diagrams, Hookup diagrams and wiring schematics.

  • Selection, sizing, and specification of

    field instruments:

    Flow (magnetic, ultrasonic, electromagnetic, venturi, etc.) • Level (ultrasonic, radar, DP type) • Pressure, temperature, and analytical instruments (pH, ORP, turbidity, residual chlorine, conductivity, DO, TOC, COD, Faecal-Coli, Total Phosphorous, Ammonia (NH-N), Nitrate (NO-N) / Nitrite (NO-N), Phosphate (PO), Sludge Volume Index (SVI) / Sludge Blanket Level, MLSS, SOx, UV Intensity / Transmittance (UVT), Gas analyzers Methane, CO, HS etc.)
  • Develop

    instrument datasheets, specifications, BOQs, and material requisitions.

  • Review and approve

    vendor/contractor submittals

    : datasheets, drawings, GA diagrams, calibration certificates, FAT procedures.
  • Coordinate with

    clients, EPC contractors, OEM vendors, and regulatory authorities.

  • Support

    technical bid evaluations

    , vendor meetings, and techno-commercial clarifications.
  • Define control logic, cause & effect matrices, interlocks, and interface requirements.
  • Design of

    PLC/RTU/SCADA systems

    , ensuring integration with electrical and process requirements.
  • Ensure all designs comply with

    Indian Standards (IS, CPHEEO manuals, BIS codes, CEA regulations) and International Standards (IEC, ISA, ISO, BS, ASTM, NFPA, ATEX/IECEx for hazardous areas)

    .
  • Keep updated with latest revisions of

    IEC 61511 (Functional Safety), ISA-5 (P&ID), ISA-20 (datasheets), ISA-84 (SIS), and related codes.

  • Apply

    design criteria aligned with client specifications

    , municipal authority guidelines, and international best practices.
  • Review and approve

    FAT & SAT procedures

    for instruments, PLC/SCADA, and communication systems.
  • Support resolution of

    field issues, design clarifications, and commissioning bottlenecks.

  • Prepare and review

    design basis reports, specifications, datasheets, and design calculation notes.

  • Ensure all deliverables align with

    ISO 9001 quality procedures

    and project-specific QMS.
  • Ensure design incorporates

    safe installation practices, explosion-proof requirements (ATEX/IECEx), SIL-rated instruments

    where required.
  • Incorporate

    safety interlocks, alarms, and redundancy

    to improve plant safety and reliability.
  • Participate in

    HAZOP/HAZID workshops

    representing instrumentation discipline.
  • Conduct internal design reviews,

    value engineering

    , and ensure

    constructability

    of designs.
  • Provide technical inputs for

    FEED, detailed design, and EPC stages.

  • Support during

    installation, testing, and commissioning

    , ensuring alignment with design intent.
  • Utilize and oversee the use of 2D and 3D CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Plant 3D, Navisworks Manage) for the development of plant general arrangement and cable tray layout drawings.
  • Should have Technical Report writing skills.
  • Should have excellent knowledge of using MS Excel, MS Word, PPT, Auto CAD.

Knowledge of 2D and 3D drafting software such as AutoCAD, REVIT and Open Plant Modeler preferred.

Project and team leadership:

  • Lead and mentor junior instrumentation engineers/designers, review their deliverables, and provide technical guidance.
  • Assign workloads, monitor progress, and ensure timely delivery of all instrumentation engineering outputs.
  • Collaborate with project managers to develop project scopes, deliverables, schedules, and budgets, and ensure projects are executed on time and within budget.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for municipal clients effectively communicating project updates and design concepts.
  • Conduct value engineering and whole-life cost analyses to recommend the most cost-effective and sustainable solutions for municipal assets.
  • Conduct knowledge-sharing sessions on latest instrumentation technologies and

    international design practices.

  • Meeting with Client and other stakeholders to get approval of the design, drawings and all other technical documents required to complete the project smoothly.
  • Capable of handling a team of 3 to 4 engineers/draftsman.
  • Guiding and mentoring engineering /CAD team for quality delivery.
