The successful candidate will be an integral member of the team, complementing the current extended Orthopaedic surgical team, by providing high quality, patient-focused, continuous and competent surgical assistance to the Orthopaedic operating surgeons under their direct supervision, whilst not performing any form of surgical intervention. They will have expertise of Orthopaedic practice, demonstrating a breadth of knowledge required to practice safely, effectively and efficiently. The role is primarily an intraoperative one, but the successful candidate will join the operating surgeon in the pre- and post-operative visits, in order to further their clinical knowledge. The Golden Jubilee University National Hospital Orthopaedic department is one of the largest Arthroplasty units within the UK, with 24 orthopaedic Consultants, two of whom specialise in foot and ankle surgery, and one in hand/wrist surgery. The department undertakes approximately 4000 primary and revision joint replacements and over 500 other elective orthopaedic procedures (including foot & ankle, soft tissue knee surgery and hand) per year. The Foot and Ankle Unit is a high volume centre for elective surgery with over 600 elective orthopaedic procedures each year and is a high volume centre for total ankle replacements. The orthopaedic department consist of 24 orthopaedic consultants (21 lower limb arthroplasty, 2 foot & ankle, 1 hand & wrist). Seven laminar flow theatres are available for surgery from Monday to Friday, with 2 laminar flow theatres available routinely on a Saturday. There is an additional non-laminar flow theatre for foot & ankle, hand & wrist and soft tissue knee surgery. This role is to manage three Siemens MRI scanners performing a range of MRI imaging (non-Cardiac), staffed with a blend of core and rotational Radiographers. The department operates an extended working day and is open Monday to Friday without on-call and as such, there is an opportunity for a condensed working week. The Microbiology Department at NHS Golden Jubilee provides clinical microbiology services to the hospital and currently processes approximately 65,000 specimens per year. The successful applicant will be involved in the day-to-day running of the Medical Microbiology diagnostic laboratory service, maintenance of existing services and for future development of the service.
