What You'll Do
The Tax Researcher will focus on adding new content into the application which provides real time tax determination for Motor Fuel, Sales and Use, Tobacco and other United States and Canadian tax types. Statutory maintenance is also completed every month. The researcher will be able to read and translate tax instructions, laws, and statutes. After which they will be able to convert the information into detailed tax rules using a knowledge of database table structure to update the application. They will seek to make tax determination easy to use for customers and ensrue accurate tax calculations. The best researchers have a great attention to detail and want to ensure that the end content simplifies taxes to the extent possible for the benefit of users.
- Research tax law, reporting, and remittance requirements to keep tax products in compliance with state, county, and local jurisdiction tax laws.
- Recommend and contribute to research projects that expand existing content based on market/environmental/legislative changes.
- Monitor legislation, administrative decisions, and judicial decisions for changes in transaction taxes in assigned jurisdictional or topical areas.
- Apply taxability and exemption rule changes into the application while providing concise documentation of the changes.
- Validate results of test transactions pre-production based on tax research.
- Build productive working relationships with state, county, and city government taxing authorities and/or legislative research units to maximize product quality.
- Consider methods to further automate and streamline existing processes.
What You'll Need to be Successful
- Enjoy technology and have interest to serve as analyst for complex tax research efforts related to taxation of sales and use, tobacco, motor fuels, and other commodities in the United States and Canada.
- Excellent research skills – ability to locate, understand, and explain complex tax requirements and scenarios from a functional and technical perspective.
- Experience working with relational databases and be able to create basic to complex SQL queries.
- Experience with conditional statements and/or formulas in Excel and familiarity with Boolean logic.
- Ability to apply mathematical calculations, percentages, and general accounting rules.
- Confidence in using English to present ideas to customers and colleagues based in India, EMEA, and the United States.
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, law, economics, or related field preferred.
