Tooling / Mold Manufacturing Head (Thriam Toolroom)

Role Summary

The Tooling / Mold Manufacturing Head will be responsible for the strategic planning, operational execution, and technical leadership of the Thriam Toolroom. This includes overseeing the entire lifecycle of moldsfrom initial design and manufacturing to maintenance and repair—for all mold manufactruing processes, primarily Injection Moulds and Compression Moulds (Thermoset and Thermoplastic). The successful candidate will drive innovation, optimize lead times, and ensure the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective tooling solutions to support the company's market competitiveness.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

1. Strategic Leadership & Management

• Toolroom Strategy:

  Develop and implement a comprehensive long-term strategy for the Toolroom, including technology upgrades, capacity planning, and skill development to support future growth in thermoset and thermoplastic tooling.

• Team Leadership:

  Lead, mentor, and manage a team of tool designers, CNC programmers, tool makers, and maintenance staff, fostering a culture of safety, precision, and continuous improvement.

• Budget Management:

  Prepare and manage the annual Toolroom operating and capital expenditure budgets, ensuring efficient resource utilization and cost control.

2. Mold Design and Engineering Excellence

• Technical Oversight:

  Provide final technical approval on all mold designs (Injection and Compression) to ensure optimal performance, manufacturability, and longevity, considering materials like phenolic, FRP, SMC, and DMC.

• Design for Manufacturability (DFM):

  Work closely with the Product Development team to implement DFM principles, reducing mold complexity and ensuring designs are production-ready for reduced "go-to-market" time.

• Advanced Analysis:

  Oversee the application of Mold Flow Analysis, cooling optimization, and simulation techniques to predict and prevent molding defects before steel is cut.

3. Toolroom Operations and Production

• Operational Efficiency:

  Optimize tool manufacturing processes, workflow, and scheduling to meet production demands and project deadlines, focusing on minimizing setup and cycle times.

• Quality Control:

  Establish and enforce stringent quality standards and inspection protocols for all newly manufactured and repaired molds, ensuring they meet geometric tolerances and functional specifications.

• Equipment Maintenance:

  Implement a robust predictive and preventative maintenance program for all Toolroom equipment, including CNC machines, EDMs, surface grinders, and fitting stations, to maximize uptime and accuracy.

4. Continuous Improvement & Cost Control

• Process Optimization:

  Drive continuous improvement initiatives (e.g., 5S, Lean Manufacturing) within the Toolroom to enhance productivity, reduce scrap rates, and lower tooling costs.

• Standardization:

  Establish and maintain standardization across tooling components, hot runner systems, and mold bases to simplify maintenance and reduce inventory requirements.

• Cost Reduction:

  Actively seek new materials, manufacturing techniques, and vendor partnerships to achieve significant cost savings in tooling without compromising quality.

5. Collaboration and Stakeholder Management

• Internal Liaison:

  Serve as the primary technical interface between the Toolroom, Production/Molding, and Quality Assurance departments to resolve tooling-related issues quickly and effectively.

• External Vendors:

  Manage relationships with external tooling suppliers, machine vendors, and material providers to ensure competitive pricing, quality standards, and timely delivery of services or components.
