Job Description

We are looking for a Deputy Head of Editorial Compliance to work towards making the editorial compliance process effective, ensuring that all audio-visual and text content created/published meets the standards required by the BBC Editorial Guidelines and relevant regulatory norms. To maintain regular communication with the BBC Liaison team and keep a log of interaction, and action necessary editorial steps.

We provide digital, audio and television content in Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi and Telugu as well as English.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

  • To ensure that all content produced by Collective Newsroom is compliant with BBC Editorial Guidelines and other applicable legal and regulatory expectations.
  • To act as a deputy to the Head of Editorial Compliance and work in tandem with the Head of Legal
  • To regularly review content produced by all Indian languages for the BBC from a compliance perspective.
  • To manage communication, feedback, review, and corrective processes with language editors.
  • To support the commissioning and newsgathering teams in key editorial decision-making.
  • To hold quality specific editorial training, focus on re-skilling, upskilling, knowledge sharing sessions with editorial teams. To work closely with Head of Training in delivering these.
  • To keep all teams updated on all editorial advice needed in high pressure situations.
  • To capture complaints and issues raised by audiences and other stakeholders and ensure proper response is sent to them and corrective measures are taken if required.
  • To work effectively with stakeholders across BBC and CNR.
  • To manage day-today integration with the BBC Liaison team.
  • To ensure that all languages are following agreed editorial protocols and workflows.
  • To give timely compliance advice on news development and commissioning of original content.
  • To actively engage with Indian language editors on issues related to editorial standards and ongoing editorial strategy.
  • To ensure that Indian languages approach to compliance and editorial standards is consistent and aligned with wider BBC.
  • To initiate improvements to the compliance, production process and be an advocate for best practices and consistency.
  • To ensure remote teams led by Assistant Editors are also aware of all editorial compliances.
  • To maintain a monthly log of exchange with the BBC Liaison team, ensure a clear audit trail of all decisions made so that issues can be tracked effectively and speedily.
  • To keep abreast of all regulatory and BBC guideline changes, potentially affecting the compliance of our output and ensure its dissemination across teams.
  • To ensure best practices are always followed, appropriate signposting is done, content disclaimers, appropriate warnings and mandatory blurring etc. are always followed where required.
  • Expected to work out-of-office hours in broadcast critical situation
Requirements


Knowledge, skills and experience

  • Considerable experience in making editorial decisions, with a proven record in production and broadcast.
  • The ability to make clear and effective decisions under pressure and communicate the decision clearly to all relevant parties.
  • Flexibility to adapt to a fast-changing multi-platform media environment.
  • Analytical and strategic thinking skills.
  • Experienced at dealing with people effectively at all levels within the organization and outside.
  • Ability to articulate and effectively argue the rationale behind key editorial decisions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all teams on day-to-day issues and strategically as well.
  • Detailed knowledge of BBC Editorial guidelines, Editorial Guidance and Best Practices.
  • Expert knowledge of regulatory guidelines and all legal provisions relevant for Digital News publishers in India.
  • Demonstrable experience of operating in markets with different cultural and/or religious sensitivities.
  • Experience of the regulation of journalistic activities right for commissioning, deployment and publication on all platforms in multiple formats.
  • Thorough Knowledge of legal issues such as libel, contempt and defamation.
  • Knowledge of BBC Compliance and the BBC complaints process.
  • Experience of using databases for managing compliance and workflows.
  • Ability to make swift, well-informed decisions on complex issues on a daily basis often within minutes or hours while ensuring all stakeholders remain fully updated.
  • Ability to prioritise urgent and important tasks on a day-to-day basis and to work with broadcast critical material and deadlines.
  • Ability to react promptly to news events, ensure content compliance, recall material when necessary, and advise on appropriate actions.
