Data Migration Engineer

Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Database Migration Engineer with deep expertise in Sybase ASE to Microsoft SQL Server migration, including schema redesign, stored procedure translation, and deployment in AWS environments. The ideal candidate will have experience using tools such as SSMA (SQL Server Migration Assistant), be well-versed in both Sybase and MSSQL internals, and capable of ensuring data integrity and performance throughout the migration lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Schema Conversion & Optimization • Translate Sybase-specific database objects to MSSQL-compatible syntax. • Redesign schema elements where required for MSSQL optimization (e.g., indexes, partitioning) • Convert stored procedures, triggers, views, and cursors from Sybase to T-SQL. • Map Sybase data types to their closest MSSQL equivalents. • Handle Sybase-specific features using MSSQL-compatible alternatives.
2. Code Conversion & Development • Use automated tools (e.g., SSMA for Sybase) and manual methods to convert code. • Rewrite or optimize business logic in MSSQL’s T-SQL. • Validate functionality of MSSQL objects through unit testing.
3. Testing & Validation • Conduct unit testing of database objects. • Support QA teams in validating database behavior post-migration. • Ensure code adheres to expected functional and performance benchmarks.
4. AWS Deployment • Assist in provisioning MSSQL environments in AWS (EC2/RDS/Managed Instance). • Deploy database schema and objects to AWS MSSQL targets. • Conduct post-deployment data validation and integrity checks. • Participate in Go-Live and hypercare support post-deployment.

Required Skills & Experience:

• Databases Strong hands-on experience with Sybase ASE and Microsoft SQL Server (T-SQL, indexes, constraints, procedures, etc.)
• Migration Tools Experience with SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) or other DB migration tools. Code Conversion Proficiency in converting complex Sybase stored procedures, triggers, views to MSSQL. Performance Tuning Query optimization, index tuning in MSSQL. Scripting & Automation: PowerShell, SQL scripts for automation of migration and deployment tasks
• AWS Cloud Familiarity with AWS RDS/EC2/Managed SQL provisioning and deployments Testing Unit testing of DB components; basic understanding of integration and functional testing Version Control & CI/CD Git, Azure DevOps or similar (nice to have) Documentation Ability to document technical details, test cases, and migration approach clearly.
