Conceptualized in the year 2004 as a philanthropic initiative for the Eastern and North-Eastern parts of India and the neighboring countries, the Tata Medical Center (TMC) started operations in Kolkata on May 16, 2011. The hospital is governed by a charitable trust – Tata Medical Centre Trust.

The hospital is an integrated Oncology facility with well-trained professional staff and equipped with modern facilities and contemporary medical equipment. The Hospital, with a capacity of 437 beds, serves all sections of the society. It provides a wide spectrum of services from diagnosis and therapy to rehabilitation and palliative support. The Institution’s objective is to excel in service, education and research. 

Tata Medical Center, Kolkata, has strived to be one of the leading cancer care and research institutions in the country and has benefited West Bengal as well as the adjoining states and neighboring countries.

TMC is also running many academic Programmes and has entered into institutional collaborations in education, research, and outreach Programmes in the field of interdisciplinary medical, research and technology.

About the Department of Paediatric Haematology & Oncology

The Department of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology is one of the largest and busiest in Eastern India. We see over 600 new children with malignancies and non-malignant blood disorders per year. We are located over an entire floor at the hospital with an in-patient ward, outpatient clinics, day care, and Paediatric ICU.

We have four Clinical Consultants and a PICU Consultant looking after every aspect of the children under our care. We also have a Visiting Consultants in Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric Cardiology, Orthopaedic Oncology, Endocrinology, Nephrology and Neurology.

Our academic programme is affiliated to the National Board of Examinations (NBE).

We are very active in the Indian Paediatric Haematology Oncology Group (InPHOG), which is the Research wing of the Paediatric Haematology Oncology (PHO) chapter of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP). We are major stakeholders in the Indian Childhood Cancer Initiative which is a multi-partner initiative, aiming to strengthen the Government of India's program for Paediatric cancer control and towards the 2030 goal of 60% survival 100% access. We actively contribute to the St Jude Global Programmes.

Our Paediatric Haematology–Oncology Unit is committed to excellence in the care of children with cancer and blood disorders, with a growing Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) programme.

Consultant – Paediatric Haematology Oncology.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Consultant in Paediatric Haematology Oncology with proven expertise in HSCT to join our team. The consultant will play a key role in advancing clinical services, mentoring junior staff, and strengthening our transplant programme while upholding the hospital’s mission of equitable care. The consultant is also expected to initiate and lead research projects with InPHOG and other international organisations such as St Jude Global and the POEM (Paediatric Oncology Eastern Mediterranean) groups.

Key Responsibilities

·        Provide comprehensive care for children with haematological malignancies, solid tumours, and benign haematological disorders.

·        Manage paediatric HSCT cases (autologous and allogeneic), including pre-transplant work-up, attending SCTU admissions, post-transplant care, and long-term follow-up.

·        Contribute to protocol development, quality assurance, and infection control in the oncology and transplant units.

·        Collaborate with paediatric intensivists, nurses, and allied health teams for holistic patient care.

·        Supervise and train residents, fellows, nurses, and allied staff in paediatric oncology and HSCT.

·        Participate in departmental academic activities, clinical research, and publications.

·        Engage in community outreach and awareness programmes for childhood cancer and blood disorders.

·        Uphold the hospital’s ethos of affordable, patient-centric care.

Qualifications & Experience

·        MD/DNB in Paediatrics with DM/NBE Fellowship Paediatric Haematology Oncology (or NMC recognised equivalent training).

·        Formal training/experience in Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation is essential.

·        Minimum of 1 year’s independent post-training experience in Paediatric Haematology Oncology.

·        Demonstrated expertise in managing paediatric haematology-oncology patients across the care continuum.

·        Strong academic orientation, with experience in teaching, audits and clinical/bench research.

·        Management skills including departmental administration and liaison with allied specialties, NGOs and Foundations we work with.

·        Commitment to ethical practice and service in a trust/non-profit healthcare setting.
