Canal Engineer Major & Minor Canal Projects

Role & responsibilities

The Canal Engineer will oversee the planning, design, execution, and maintenance of major and minor irrigation/tunnel/canal works. The role requires extensive practical experience in earthworks, canal lining, and structural elements of irrigation networks. The Canal Engineer will manage teams of staff and contractors, ensure that construction adheres to design drawings and specifications, monitor quality and safety, and ensure timely completion within budget.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise earthwork operations for canals: excavations, embankments, cuttings, spoil management, compaction, etc.
• Manage lining works of both major and minor canal reach.
• Oversee construction and installation of canal structures (head regulators, cross drainage structures, aqueducts, escape channels, culverts, bridges) for major/minor canals.
• Read, interpret, and review structural and civil drawings and construction plans: ability to mark out work on the ground, verify dimensions, elevations, and alignment as per drawings.
• Coordinate and manage multiple contractors and site staff: scheduling tasks, assigning responsibilities, monitoring progress, ensuring safety and compliance, reviewing daily progress reports, and addressing delays or deviations.
• Conduct site inspections, ensure correct execution of work as per specifications and drawings.
• Address field issues: alignments, earthwork slopes, spoils disposal zones, verification of profiles and cross-sections of canal embankments, etc

Required Skills & Experience

• Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering (or similar) with specialization/experience in water resources, irrigation works, hydraulic/civil structures.
• Strong working knowledge of earthwork operations (cut, fill, embankment, spoil disposal, ground preparation) for canal works.

Preferred candidate profile

• Demonstrated experience in canal lining works (major and minor canals) planning, supervising contractor works, verifying quality of lining, finishing. Proven experience managing construction of canal structures (headworks, regulators, cross drainage, culverts, etc.).
• Field experience in irrigation/canal projects: site execution, supervision, inspections.
• Familiarity with safety standards, construction contractual norms for large-scale civil works.
