Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the Mechanical Development Engineering team focused on new product and technology development.
  • Drive the mechanical design and optimization of transformer components such as core clamping, tank design, and cooling systems.
  • Develop and implement new design concepts and materials to enhance product performance and reliability.
  • Collaborate closely with Electrical Design, Manufacturing, and Test Engineering teams during product development and validation stages.
  • Introduce and oversee design validation methods including FEA, CFD, vibration, and short-circuit mechanical stress analysis.
  • Standardize mechanical design processes and tools across VTC/GTC plants to improve consistency and efficiency.
  • Evaluate and implement new technologies, materials, and manufacturing methods for transformer mechanical components.
  • Lead root cause investigations and provide mechanical solutions for design or field failures.
  • Provide technical support during FAT, prototype builds, and field evaluations.
  • Develop and execute cost reduction and product performance improvement programs.
  • Mentor and develop engineering talent, building technical depth and innovation capability within the team.
  • Represent the mechanical development team in internal and customer design reviews.
  • Ensure all designs comply with applicable standards (IEEE, IEC, CSA, ANSI) and internal engineering requirements.
  • Partner with sourcing and quality teams to qualify new materials and vendors for mechanical components.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum

    15 years

    of experience in transformer mechanical design and development, including hands-on involvement in product engineering.
  • Strong background in mechanical design principles, transformer construction, and insulation systems.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, etc.) and simulation tools (FEA, CFD).
  • Proven experience in leading mechanical design or development teams within a transformer or heavy electrical equipment environment.
  • Strong understanding of transformer manufacturing processes and mechanical reliability factors.
  • Experience with testing and validation of mechanical assemblies.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with large power transformer development or advanced mechanical technologies (vacuum processing, new insulation materials, alternative fluids).
  • Exposure to Lean Product Development or Design for Manufacturability (DFM).
  • Experience working in a multi-site, global engineering organization.
  • PMP or Six Sigma certification.
