Description
The WAN L2 Engineer will be responsible for providing advanced support for wide-area network operations, including MPLS, SD-WAN, VPN connectivity, routing issues, link stability, and ISP coordination. The role requires hands-on troubleshooting expertise, strong understanding of routing protocols, and the ability to handle escalations from L1 teams while ensuring high network availability across distributed enterprise environments.The ideal candidate will have solid experience working with telecom ISPs or large enterprise networks and demonstrate proficiency in WAN technologies, network monitoring, and RCA documentation.Key Responsibilities:Operational SupportProvide L2 support for WAN connectivity issues across MPLS, SD-WAN, ILL, and VPN networks.Troubleshoot packet drops, latency, jitter, routing instability, and link performance issues.Manage routing protocol operations (BGP, OSPF, Static Routes) and ensure optimized path selection.Handle incidents related to primary/secondary link failures and failover behavior.Monitor WAN health using NMS tools and respond to alerts proactively.Coordinate with ISPs for outage updates, link maintenance, and problem resolution.Support customer branch connectivity, router configurations, and WAN device upgrades.Perform line tests, loop tests, and backbone troubleshooting with service providers.Assist L1 teams with escalations and provide detailed technical guidance.Incident, Change & Problem Management:Perform root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring WAN incidents.Document symptoms, isolation steps, and final resolution clearly for internal use.Participate in scheduled changes, router migrations, and bandwidth upgrades.Ensure compliance with change management processes.Maintain updated network diagrams and inventory for WAN circuits and devices.Technical Skills Required (Mandatory):Strong experience in WAN technologies: MPLS, SD-WAN, ILL, Broadband, LTE backupHands-on with routing protocols: BGP, OSPF, Static Routes, VRRP/HSRPExpertise in WAN devices: Cisco Routers, FortiGate, Juniper, Aruba, or equivalentStrong understanding of TCP/IP, routing tables, ARP, NAT, ACLsProficiency with NMS tools: SolarWinds, PRTG, Spectrum, SevOne, NagiosExperience troubleshooting:Packet loss, latency, jitterRouting convergenceLink flaps & circuit-level issuesAbility to interpret:Interface statistics, logs, route tablesBGP summaries, OSPF neighbors, traceroute outputsFamiliarity with ticketing tools: ServiceNow, Remedy, JiraISP coordination and backbone-level troubleshooting experience.Preferred Skills:Working knowledge of SD-WAN controllers (Viptela, Fortinet, Aruba, Silver Peak).Experience with firewall basics (policies, VPN tunnels).Knowledge of QoS, traffic shaping, and WAN optimization.Telecom background: Airtel, Jio, Tata Communications, Sify, ACT, etc.

Strong analytical and troubleshooting mindset.Ability to work in 247 rotational NOC environment.Clear communication for ISP and customer coordination.Ability to handle escalations and mentor L1 engineers.Process-oriented and disciplined approach to documentation.Educational Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Electronics, Telecommunications, or related field.Preferred certifications:CCNA (Mandatory)CCNP (Preferred)SD-WAN vendor certifications
