We are seeking a skilled and driven Thermal Simulation Engineer to join our expanding team and contribute to the success of our eVTOL program.
About the role:
We are looking for a highly skilled and driven Thermal Simulation Engineer to lead the design and analysis of thermal systems across our eVTOL platform to ensure effective cooling and maximum output. This position focuses on the simulation-based development of important subsystems such as battery thermal management, propulsion cooling, avionics heat dissipation, cabin HVAC, and structural thermal analysis. Furthermore, the applicant will work with the Aerodynamics group to support CFD simulations in both external and internal flow scenarios. A solid understanding of aerodynamic principles and thermodynamics is required. The ideal candidate should have experience with Simcenter STAR-CCM+, our principal thermal and CFD simulation package.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and manage multifidelity models for evaluating and enhancing cooling system designs.
- Use STAR-CCM+ to model the thermal performance of batteries, power train, avionics, HVAC, and structures.
- Conduct steady-state and transient thermal analyses on flight profiles.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams to determine thermal requirements and boundary conditions.
- Analyze and interpret simulation results to guide design improvements.
- Optimize thermal systems such as cooling loops, ducts, heat exchangers, and insulation.
- Accompany trade studies, design reviews, and certification activities with thermal insights.
- Script simulation tasks and parametric investigations in STAR-CCM+.
- Perform CFD simulations for external aerodynamics and internal flow paths.
- Document simulation processes, results, and technical findings.
- Stay current on thermal and CFD methodologies in electric aircraft.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor s or master s degree in mechanical, Aerospace, or Thermal Engineering.
- Minimum 3+ years of experience in thermal and/or CFD simulation roles within aerospace, automotive, or similar high-performance industries.
- Strong foundation in thermodynamics, heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation), and fluid dynamics.
- Proficient with Simcenter STAR-CCM+, including meshing, solver setup, and post-processing.
- Experience with thermal management of batteries, electric motors, power electronics, and avionics.
- Working knowledge of aerodynamic principles including turbulence modelling, flow separation, and boundary layer behaviour.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with eVTOL, UAV, or electric aircraft platforms.
- Familiarity with multi-physics simulations and thermal interactions across subsystems.
- Understanding of certification standards (e.g., FAA, EASA, DO-160) related to thermal safety and comfort.
- Experience with scripting for automation (e.g., Java or Python in STAR-CCM+).
- Exposure to test correlation and experimental validation of simulation results.
