Summary

The Sub Editor is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, clarity, and quality of news content across Kumudam’s print and digital platforms. The role involves editing reports, rewriting copies, verifying facts, ensuring adherence to editorial standards, and coordinating with reporters, designers, and senior editors to produce compelling and error-free news content.

Key Responsibilities

Editing & Proof reading

• Edit news stories for grammar, structure, clarity, and consistency.
• Rewrite articles to improve readability while maintaining the original meaning and tone.
• Ensure adherence to Kumudam’s editorial style, linguistic standards, and brand voice (Tamil).

Content Quality & Fact-Checking

• Verify facts, names, dates, statistics, and quotes in all submitted stories.
• Ensure accuracy and reliability of news content from reporters and contributors.
• Maintain high editorial integrity and follow ethical journalism standards.

Newsroom Coordination

• Work closely with reporters, correspondents, photographers, and senior editors.
• Provide constructive feedback and guidance to strengthen news copy.
• Assist in planning news coverage, headlines, and layout requirements.

Print & Digital Responsibilities

• Craft crisp and engaging headlines, subheads, captions, and blurbs.
• Adapt stories appropriately for print, web, mobile, and social media.
• Coordinate with design and pagination teams for timely page production.

Content Development

• Suggest story ideas, angles, and improvements during editorial meetings.
• Support breaking news editing and fast-paced updates during peak periods.
• Ensure balance, neutrality, and relevance in news stories.

Required Skills & QualificationsEssential

• Graduate or Postgraduate degree in Journalism / Mass Communication / Literature (Tamil preferred).
• 1–10 years of experience in editing within a news publication (print/digital).
• Strong command of Tamil language (writing, grammar, style).
• Ability to work under tight deadlines in a dynamic newsroom environment.
• Excellent rewriting, comprehension, and editorial judgment.
• Familiarity with current affairs, politics, culture, and social issues.

Desirable

• Experience with editorial CMS tools and pagination software.
• Knowledge of SEO principles for digital content.
• Skills in headline writing for both print and digital platforms.
