Role Overview

As a Senior Staff Backend Engineer, you will lead the design and development of distributed systems and next-generation platforms that power Coupang s global e-commerce experience. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams across geographies to solve complex problems at scale, while mentoring engineers and driving technical excellence across the organization.

What You Will Do

Lead the development of scalable and fault-tolerant backend systems
Define and execute technical strategy in alignment with product roadmaps
Drive architectural decisions and promote best practices across engineering teams
Collaborate with senior leadership to prioritize and plan strategic initiatives
Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement through Agile methodologies
Own operational metrics and ensure high system reliability and observability
Mentor and grow engineering talent through coaching and technical guidance
Establish and manage operational support processes for backend services

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor s or Master s degree in Computer Science or related field
15+ years of experience in software development
10+ years of experience building and operating backend services and web applications
Strong proficiency in Java and Spring Framework
Deep expertise in distributed systems, storage, and server technologies

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS)
Hands-on experience with NoSQL and relational/columnar databases
Familiarity with CI/CD automation and Agile methodologies
Knowledge of observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, and ELK stack
Passion for reliability engineering and operational excellence
